Hi everyone,

Re-purposing garage. Been a while since I've owned a porsche have previously had 997's.

If I want a car to track which is going to be reliable and enjoyable (have never tracked before but want this car to do that in) and thinking about £100k what would you suggest from the Porsche stable?

Was thinking of ordering a 718 GT4 new; what's the wait time on these if it's even possible to order these days?!

Interested in people's thoughts.

Thanks

991.1 gt3 or GT4 would be my choice, plenty second hand to choose from at the mo too, just in time for this summers track days :-)

Thanks. Yes, can see some on for sale but if I were a patient man (given other cars), could spec my own GT4 and wait? Or is that not an option these days?

Basically this. Don’t think you’ll get a brand new order 718 GT4 anytime soon. In fact I believe order book is closed on these now?

GT4 will be a bit cheaper to run if you keep it long enough to get to get into servicing and maintenance windows.

991.1 GT3 drivetrain is sensational at full chat and PDK give you options and capacity.

Can’t go wrong either way.

Serious supply issues, and talk of production ending imminently days you won't get a new 718 GT4 if you don't already have an order in.

A used one would be my choice for your brief all day long, over and above a GT3.

You will be waiting ages and I`m not sure if I`m making it up , but I thought I read that dealers are not taking GT4 orders anymore - might be worth a quick phone call.

You can get a PDK GT4 for £105k today that will be as new.

Don't waste your breath trying to order a new one as there are plenty hardly driven used cars for sale. You have two choices as others have said, either a 718GT4(PDK or Manual) or 991.1GT3. With the latter check what engine it has fitted(G series much preferred)
With a 718GT4 you have a choice of both Manual and PDK, both with pros and cons.
Whichever one you choose make sure its got the 918 Buckets and rollcage to fit harnesses. Another point is that the GT4 will be much easier to push on track for a novice as there isn't the need to manage the weight transfer to such a degree as the GT3 on corner entry which can be very tricky to perfect but rewarding when you get it right.
My first choice would be the GT4 as its newer, under Porsche warranty and easier to push hard.

ETA £100k a great and sensible budget as going much higher gets you in trouble with track insurance and value concerns which will stop you pushing anywhere near your limits.

...as £100K to get into something you haven't ever done seems incredibly risky to me.....at least do a few track days with a hire before betting £100K on the farm.

Just be aware that a GT3 has a Porsche Motorsport engine and GT4 doesn't (as good as the engine is though). Not that it makes huge amount of difference to us mere mortal drivers as both cars are rockets on track

I’ve never understood why you would buy a £100k car for trackdays, especially when you haven’t done one before. Start with something much cheaper to learn.

Agreed. Track insurance cover is getting harder these days and it's unlikely to get any easier.

However, if you have the £££ and can either afford to lose it or can get the insurance then why not!

Well, it wouldn't exclusively be used on track but point taken. I have other cars to use

You can pick up a nearly new 718 gt4 between 105k to 115k.

If you could get a late 2021 car or early 2022 car you have the bonus of the 3 year factory warranty.

please do as you haven't thought this through...at all. In danger of blowing a fortune on something you haven't even tried, and that goes for road use too....at least test drive one first!

Well, I never said I hadn't driven one or would indeed drive one first before signing on the dotted line but point taken!
