A Porsche 996 GT3 Mk1 or a Ferrari F355?
Specifically the next 5 years-which could be the better punt and why?

Good question. They're probably close to the bottom of their depreciation curve, both have a following that would have them over their replacements and are both fine motor cars.

I'd want one of each. But they are different cars - a 355 is never going to hold a candle to a GT3 on track.

And a 355 will cost you a lot more to run for those 5 years (the difference, for 5k miles a year, would be £thousands).

One belt change over that period perhaps - 355s are on the whole very reliable y'know

Not talking about reliability, talking about servicing. When i was looking for one, ever car i saw had 4 figure service bills every year... well into 4 figures in some cases.

There are so many myths around about 355 running costs. Yes go to Marenellos and they will put you over a barrel, you won't be able to walk for weeks after. But thats like someone taking a 3.2 carrera to AFN. There are specialists around, and it needn't cost the world to run a Ferrari. 12 months in my 355 wasn't that much different to 12 months in my 993C2 in terms of running costs. And yes I have done a belt service on it. Come to think of it, take a 993 to AFN for a clutch change, and it isn't that much cheaper than I paid for a belt service on the 355.

Get a bad 911 and you will end up putting a huge amount of money into it, and the same rings true for a Ferrari.

The 355's i was looking at were at a certain well known indie near Heathrow, and every single one had 4 figure service bills every year (regularly over £2k).

Maybe i'm lucky with my Porsche indie (Northway) but if i ran almost any 993 for 5 years i wouldn't ever expect to see a four figure bill unless it included a clutch.

The tyre bill is another matter. 22k miles in my C4S cost me near enough £2k in tyres in a year!
