Cracked windscreen - in the most stupid of ways
Discussion
Aaaaah - I cant believe how flipping stupid I have just been.
I thought Id wash the car and remove all the squashed bugs from yesterdays fun, while the were all hot and easy to jet wash off as the car was sitting in the sun.
Yup, you guessed it - I watered the hot windscreen and - Crack !
As soon as it went I realised what a total plonker I was.
So, will Autoglass do a good job or should I take it to my specialist of choice, Autofarm ?

Arrange for Autoglass to do it at Autofarm (plenty of room in their car park) under supervision and validation from AutoFarm... thats what I would do.I thought Id wash the car and remove all the squashed bugs from yesterdays fun, while the were all hot and easy to jet wash off as the car was sitting in the sun.

Not a Porsche but we had Autoglass do our F56 JCW and the fitter did a top job , minis are apparently are a bit awkward and not all fitters like doing, so it comes down to the fitter, don’t think I would use any of the other big outfits though!
None of them like doing a Porsche, especially the 993 and 997. The rest are still hit and miss. An F56 is 'trainee' easy. Remember, the finished 997 windscreen should be recessed, and the black trim should provide a chamfer transition from glass to body.
Unless your policy allows it, Autoglass will not supply a genuine Porsche windscreen. They will probably dispatch a FY (Fuyao) glass stating that it's 'just the same, without the logo' which of course, is total horses
t. You can nominate your own repairer and there are several ways to do this.

Was the windscreen already weak in some way? I'm quite surprised that tap water has managed to crack a hot windscreen, it's not quite as extreme of a frozen windscreen and hot water.
Most likely there was a chip in the glass. Sudden temperature change: crack. This kind of weather is very tricky for repairing stonechips on windscreens; a lot of guys out there hate doing them for this very reason. There is a cool down procedure, and general dos and don'ts when attempting to repair in this heat, but it's still an increased risk. Some repair kits are better than others. Anything that relies on a mechanical vacuum system is asking for trouble.

I notice that Glassman has not mentioned it so I will. He is is a craftsman at fitting replacement windows in cars and is highly regarded. You can't go wrong getting him to fit your replacement window
A +1 from me for Glassman. He did my 997 turbo, with an OEM screen and it was perfect. I’d never use anyone else now and I suspect many Porsche owners feel the same. Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
