Boxster S - spec changes?
Discussion
Hi,
Interloper from the TVR forums here, trying to recover from the rather low figure I've just been quoted to insure a Boxster S - not as a replacement for my Tuscan, but as a replacement for my daily driver.
As a result, I've started having a poke around Autotrader, and I see early Boxster S's can be picked up for £19k-£21k (and upwards, of course).
So, if I were to buy one of these cars at the bottom of the market, what am I missing out on compared to a later car, other than the glass rear screen?
Other than the usual (non Porsche specific) stuff, what else should I look for when buying?
Yours,
Very Tempted

Hi fellow TVR owner
I'm in exactly the same boat - fancy the idea of a Boxster S (if possible a 2003 facelift one) after doing a bit of searching and was pleasantly surprised to find insurance, servicing seems fairly reasonable (cheaper than a Chim 450).
Try www.BoXa.net and you should pick up a few tips and hints (not as good as PH).
One thing that seems to crop up regularly is the Rear Main Seal (RMS)- between the engine and gearbox which is prone to leaking and if not fixed can lead to major expense (it seems it can occur fairly frequently in some cases)-an independent charges circa £300 to do it.
Hope you get sorted

Speaking as someone who owns a Boxster S and a Chim and replaced his MY01 BoxS with a MY03 BoxS I can comment on your question.
But first! What a nice combination: A Tuscan S and a Boxster S! Total grin machine coupled with a reliable smile machine - good on yer!
So - an older S.
You will be missing the following features:
a) The (aforementioned) glass rear screen.
b) The glovebox (only appeared on MY03, Sep 02 on cars)
c) 252bhp vs 260bhp on the MY03 cars
d) slightly older looking interior
The above all being minor improvements.
An upside is that the older cars do not use the MOST bus to connect up the entertainment systems. The MOST bus restricts your choice of aftermarket Sat Nav/stereos etc significantly (in fact, pretty much, to Porsche supplied units). The older car can have a wide range of systems fitted.
If its a daily driver then the stereo/satnav thing is worth considering.
Enjoy whatever you choose.

Prices you are talking about you can't get anywhere close to a facelift (MY03) Boxster S.
I have just been through the entire exercise and bought an 01Y 8000 miler for 26k (but mint)18" turbo look wheels, litronics, arctic/blue etc. and very detailed OPC service history.
I am delighted with it and, as advice, would say:
Older cars in this sort of condition (if you keep them that way) will depreciate less.
If my plastic rear screen does split I shall replace it with a glass one fitted by an independent.
Hope this helps.

- Dont worry about age too much - condition
is everything
- Choose which options (colour, extras which
can't be altered & you must have)
- Be prepared to look at a lot of cars over as
wide an area as possible

For a plastic one try these:
