I finally took delivery of a 17k km basalt lhd 993 turbo yesterday and have since driven it about 300 miles on all different roads in all different conditions and I just wanted to say what a fabulous car I think it is.I have owned most types of 996's (including turbo,GT2,GT3 etc) and have driven several 997's but the 993 might just be the most accomplished 911 I have ever driven on the road.(GT3RS unbeatable on the track imo...)
I was expecting superior build quality but I still can't believe how solid and rattle free the 993 feels in comparison to virtually any contemporary car I have driven. The ride is a perfect balance, stiff but not bumpy, communicative and confidence inspiring.I was anticipating the usual 'getting to know you' period but after about 5 mins I felt comfortable enough to start pushing on pretty hard much to my surprise. In no time at all the wife told me to slow down.
The gear shift on this car is without question the best I've ever experienced on any 911,so fluid and yet totally precise, really lovely.Even the interior felt right, despite the usual 911 blandness, with some lovely touches. The dials are perfect, the seats really grippy and much more supportive than on a 996.Even the stereo came with a 10 speaker nokia upgrade (rare extra I'm told) and sounded awesome.
Minor disappointments for me are the engine noise, not because it's unpleasant but because I was hoping for a little more, and the break pedal doesn't have the feel of the later Porsches and will take some getting used to.
As a huge fan of the 996 range I was always irritated by those that said the 993 was the ultimate incarnation of the 911 and I remain a huge fan of cars like the 996 GT2/3 (although not,I must say, of the 997 as yet).Having said all that it seems a decent 993 turbo, rhd or lhd, can basically be had for well specced Boxster money and as such strikes me as an incredible bargain. If only for the gorgeous, compact shape and genuinely better build quality I'd urge people to check them out in comparison to the newer stuff. Finally (and I apologise if this is getting dull) there's the depreciation factor to consider too.
I absolutely intend to post some pics on here (I have some on my phone) if anyone wants to tell me how to do that.Cheers.

Can you say how much you paid ? have looked on http://uk.mobile.de/ and better examples seem to be c. 55,000 Euro ( c. 37,930 GBP at 1 GBP = 1.45 Euro ), which is more that I remember verysideways paying ( 35,000 GBP ? ) Love the looks, build, and power from the passenger rides I have had, enjoy !

Gunner how do you feel the 996tt compares to the 993tt I've got a 993tt and the 996tt is the way I'd like to progress but posts like yours make me think again.I've driven a few 996tt at opc's and without being able to press on too hard.I thought the 996tt was better in every area except looks.I felt the 996tt done everything the same as the 993 but better, your veiws guy's?

I paid north of 60k EU and a little more on top to get the car serviced on arrival in the uk by a trusted OPC who have now also provided me with a warranty. All told north of £40k but for the best example I have come across. It's in absolutely mint condition.I also preferred lhd given the larger fuel tank and pedal layout.I'd absolutely take one over the 996tt.Don't get me wrong the 996tt is a magnificent car but lacks the character, looks, build quality, rarity and overall driving experience that I believe the 993 version offers. This is of course purely subjective, both are wonderful everyday roadcars.I loved my 996tt but this feels rather more special.
