So bought my dream car 6 weeks ago, 981 Boxster GTS.

It’s a beautiful, lovely car with more power and style than I’ll ever need.

However, there are things I don’t like. MINOR Annoyances.

Alcantera steering wheel. It’s uncomfortable, too big for a sports car, too thick, and the material seems to dry the finger tips and feels crap in the hand. My Audis wheel is much more comfortable. Some audio controls would be nice too. Was that really too much to ask?

Seats. They really are a bit crap. Not near comfortable enough. Not enough support, not enough adjustment. Yes it only has the two way electrics, but that’s not the story. The shape and size of the seat is a bit poor considering the cars price bracket. Much cheaper cars have much better seats.

Too much wind buffeting with the roof down. BMW convertible was much more comfortable and far less buffeting. I’m going to have to get a beanie and look like a prat….!

Drink problem in sport mode. Lol I don’t really care. Because NOISE!

No cruise control because not optioned. Stupid error by initial purchase. I need it for license protection!!!!!

Despite the above, I will struggle on with it. hehe

What don’t you like about your dream car Porsche now you have it??????

Why did you buy it then ? One assumes you had a test drive ? Or are you being ironic ?

You don’t tend to notice everything about a car on a test drive.

I think you’ll find that is the story.

You got a car with seats that don’t work for you.

I have 18-way adjustables, they are superb. I’ve also done a few long journeys in the buckets, they’re also brilliant.

Well my entry into Porsche was a 981 BGTS and I dont really recall the stuff you are mentioning. Ok I bought mine new so options were down to me. It sounds to me like you really didnt have enough of test drive even when I was buying secondhand cars test drive was 30 minutes minimum and if they said no which some did I walked away

1987 911, the ventilation on a hot day and heating in a cold day is crap.

But I have gotten used to it in the last 18 years hehe

Enjoy your new car.

Test drive was about 15 minutes and it was the third car I had driven. Sussing the little foibles out has take weeks.

None of them are enough to put me off the car.

Thanks, I’m sure I will.

This reply was what the thread is supposed to be about.

I’m pretty sure Porsche improve and refine their cars all the time. So they therefore can’t have been perfect. I’m just wondering what others find details they don’t like, about their otherwise wonderful cars.

The Porsche tax on spare parts. Ludicrously high prices even for older cars.

Current Porker (987.2 3.4).

Engine sounds quite good. Would rather it sounded great.
Top of the rev range is a little bit flat.
PASM dampers are mediocre quality, even when tweaked with the DSC box.
Seat is a bit too high.
'Sport' seat is fairly rubbish re support, sadly buckets super rare unless R.
Actually, the whole car is a bit too tall, wish they'd dropped the seat and roof by a couple of inches.
Would prefer the 997 dash top (this is actually doable, but probably can't be arsed).
Steering wheel rim is a bit too thicc.
Gear shift isn't great, somewhat fixed this by fitting a factory short shift. Could be better.
Factory brake pedal is crap. Somewhat fixed that with the bigger brake MC. Could be better.
Bose sound system is mediocre.
PCM has bluetooth for phone but not music. Fixed that but annoying that it's not standard.

And finally wish the people ordering these things new back in the day had better taste re colours and had a clue re options. Decent colour and spec virtually non existent. Takes forever to find a half decent one and finding one with absolutely the right spec super hard.

Oh, and the 20k mile official service interval is annoying. IMO it's too long and it means it's hard to find a used example that's been serviced properly. Loads of cars out there that have run near 20k on the same oil. Yuck.

Still a great car and loads to like about the driving experience, it's a lovely steer in many ways despite the things I don't like. And it's very practical. There's nothing at all I'd rather have for the money and little if anything I'd rather have for double the money, would have to get up into triple to quadruple the money to get to cars I'd definitely prefer.

Anyway, never driven a car that didn't have quite a few things that I didn't like. Sadly, no major car manufacturer has built a car for me, personally! Current car is good enough that it's probably my forever car in terms of something interesting and ICE. It's a great car. But there will always be things I'd want to improve.

I have several Porsches. I am generally very happy with them.

However, they do not understand how to build simple interfaces to Nav, heating and cooling and so on. When you look at a good Japanese car this stuff is a breeze. Of course someone will say that people who worry about this stuff are not focused on the important stuff like driveablilty anyway.

I think the two things are not mutually exclusive. Porsche are very good at engineering but they need to hire a couple of Apple people to design simple intuitive interfaces. Just look at how much better a phone nav system is to the Porsche one for example.

And of course there are cupholders...I think I would prefer to have none than the silly things they install.

I have a fantasy that all of the German cupholder designers get together in a Schloss in the hills for a Christmas party and over copious amounts of schnapps present awards for the most infuriating cupholders that the stupid foreigners have to decipher. Not just Porsches either, though the handcuffs that pop out to the 997 dash are designed to vibrate so the coffee spills. I had an M6 which had something that looked like a gynaecological instrument that you had to slot in , an SL that provided a sort of tiny toilet that also slotted in and so on and also so fold out holders positioned just under the nav system, so they could short it out if one braked.

Fun to drive though. Would be nice to be able to have a water bottle to hand on a desert drive ..........

Nothing really. I wish it had had a couple more options but I can live without them. If I try hard I guess I could say that the front lip is inconveniently low - think speed humps and sloping exits into steeply cambered roads; that's sports PASM 20 mm lower than standard for you.

The pop out cup holders are, on initial exposure to them, wonderful, magical things.

Then you try to use them. They seem far too high up. And not that secure. I don't trust them. They don’t look like they really want to hold your drink securely. And so high up. Hot drinks should probably be kept at about knee level…. I can’t bring myself to use them. Heavy braking would see the contents thrown over the dash. Heavy acceleration, well, there must be you-tube videos of busty lovelies getting splattered with milkshakes…. Must do a search on that one…..

But award winningly beautiful in aesthetic design. Engineering master pieces.

Sorry, I could probably have worded my response differently. All my recent Porsches were ordered prior to launch so there was no opportunity for a test drive - the only exception being my current Macan. So Perhaps I am not the best one to judge the effectiveness of a test drive ! Ironically the only one I’ve had an issue with is the Macan - I really cannot get on with the touch screen for the media, selecting music is dangerous in my view - but I do not learn from experience it seems since I have just ordered a Macan T ( no test drive) which will have even more touch screen operation ! thanks

I've had my 997 for 10 years. Things that annoy me:
- How easy the interior wears / marks
- Excessive tyre noise, makes longer trips more of a chore than they should
- Manual gearbox can be quite recalcitrant

By contrast to you, I love the (standard / comfort) seats. Sports seats (with the "winglets") instead I find uncomfortable. The design is different in 9x1s though, I think?

I believe that, ultimately, German engineers don't have their heart set on eating / drinking inside the car, which is why the designs are always tentative. Its a token effort for the foreign markets!
