996 C4S or 997 C4S
Discussion
I'm looking at buying my first Porsche. We currently have an Audi RS4 but the misses drives it like a Fiat 500 so that the kids can sleep. I've agreed to give her the Audi and I'll take care of my own transport. Consequently I'd like to know the answers to the following questions:-
1) Should I go ahead in my standard impatient fashion and buy the 996 C4S or wait for the 997 version (given I live in Europe it should be out here before the UK)?
2) If I do buy the 996 version what should I be wary of (other than price !)?
3) I do most of my driving on northern Italian motorways which are not agressively speed controlled and tend to be quite quick roads. Will either the 996 or 997 be giving me problems at the 20,000 mile mark or will they easily clock up 100,000 miles without too much bother (assumign adequate storage and servicing etc.)?
4) Are there any subtle issues I should be aware of that jo-punter normally misses by a country mile?
Any help hugely appreciated.

Hi,
I had a 996 C4S until recently.
Apart from the rubbish service from the OPC, the car was great.
I did suffer 2 x RMS failures, both fixed under warranty. My car had done c23,000 when I got rid of it. It did suffer from a number of rattles and squeaks but nothing major apart form the RMS.
Get one with satnav or you will be stiffed at resale time. I also had the PSE which sounded fantastic.

997 C4S - I have a 996 turbo and frankly the build quality on it is poor and prices are really dropping.
The 997 has all of those build issues sorted + significantly revised rear suspension + better interior + more power + slightly larger fuel tank (I believe). All adds up to a better car - discounts on old 996 C4S may be tempting but will cost you more in the medium term than an 997 C4S. Good hunting.

Cyrus, I see you have some issues with the build quality on your tt. I've read this a number of times yet I 'sat' in a tt last week and it all seemed fairly solid. Can you elaborate on what these weaknesses in build quality are?
Many thanks
indeed me too, was going to PM Cyrus actually but hopefully he will see this
