968CS vs M3 Evo
Discussion
Not bad article in this months BMW Car magazine comparing the 2.
The mag is from the same stable as GT purely but I think it is a better written mag (if ya like BM's!!)
Despite it being a BM mag the 968 is highly rated and its a good idea as a comparion with prices quite close. Obiously the M3 is a more powerful luxo barge in comparison with the stripped CS, but its reasonably well written although if the Dr had done it needless to say it would have been far superior... (with the added bonus of interesting gramatical & spelling mistakes!!)
Perhaps a fairer comparison would be with the rare M3GT vs the 968CS although the GT is a rare and more expensive car it is more in the line of the CS.
It made me think why you would ever consider a standard non CS 968 tho, when the M3Evo and the far cheaper non Evo M3 are available for similar if not less cash.

Is that not pretty much the reason why the 968 never sold in any volume when new?
Well I guess that was a factor but probabally also the fact that the 968 looks like the front end has been hit many times with the same ugly stick that hit the new bug eyed Morgan over a decade later & the whole car lost the well proportioned look of the 944.
The 968CS may be highly praised by all who drive one ( indeed the only ever complaint is usually the relitive lack of power) however stripped out Porkers have never sold in high numbers, with the 993RS only just topping the 1000 sold mark and it seems fewer buyers were interested in a stripped porker that had its engine in the front as those crazy Porsche buyers were still prefering their Porsches to have an engine in the rear and have it cooled by good old fashioned air...

I'd encourage anyone considering these two cars not to worry about the semantics, drive an M3 Evo and it might just surprise you - they're a blast IMHO.
I ran an E36 M3 Evo for a couple of years and it never failed to put a smile on my face. One of the best engines ever, monster brakes, entertaining RWD handling, steering a little bit lacking in feel compared to a 911 but not bad by any means. All the "not as pure as the original E30" comments may be justified to a degree but it is still better than 99% of the cars on the road and that engine could make up for a lot in my books. 321bhp from 3.2 litres and a sound, dare I say it on this page, that even a 911 fails to match (obviously IMHO)!
Mine was not all that reliable though, 3 failed VANOS units, new ECU brain, lucky BMW footed the bill not me!
As for 968 vs M3 - I guess it's down to what you want - I'm sure a 968CS will leave an M3 in its wake on a tight track or twisty B-road, but who will have more fun more of the time? I guess that depends on what you look for in a car.

What about the 968 Sport. Wasn't that a UK only model with some of the luxuries bolted back on? I've driven both 968 CS and M3 Evo. 968 pi55es on the M3 in every department...OK so no rear seats, but have you tried to sit in the rear seats of an M3 with them set in a comfortable positon for those up front? M3 had more understeer than a sledge too and brakes....what brakes?....
No contest here and if you want comfort check out the 968 sport. Plus rarity has to be a good thing doesn't it? How many 968s have you seen on CCTV ram raiding an offie in Brum?
