I've been searching for a 991.1 and am close taking the plunge. Still doing a bit of research on a few points. They are c£80-85k and generally speaking, the date of manufacture is 2014/15 but all are low mileage, I.e. mileage ranges from 20-40k.

Some random questions which I need help with:

1. Gap insurance - the cars I’m looking are 8-9 years old. If I take out a gap insurance policy on day one, the car will be more than 10 years old before the policy expires. Normally, does the policy expire when the cars turns 10 or once the policy expires? (If it’s the latter, I could take out an 3 years policy?) Are there any companies that provide cover for cars older than 10 years?

2. Insurance - generally speaking is it going to be cheaper to get insurance for a company car or for myself as a private owner? (This will help make the decision if I buy the car or if the company buys the car.) Any recommendations for insurance companies in case the company buys the car? I could limit the driver to myself only or to 1-2 others who are employed by the company. It would be myself driving the car though.

3. Is there a scratch/dent repair insurance policy I can buy for cars this age? I had a look at ALA but to qualify the car has to be less than 10 years old. I’m not sure if the cars will continue to be covered if they are over 10 years old after the policy is taken out.

4. A couple of the cars have ceramic coating. Is it worth having self healing PPF applied on top of this?

5. I’m narrowing the choice of cars to one with a Porsche warranty or one that will pass the 111 point check so a Porsche warranty can be added. Are any of the aftermarket warranties comparable or better? The issue is the cars will be10 years old soon and (from memory) Warranty Wise and the like usually don’t cover anything over 10 years old. Porsche will cover the car up to 15 years old.

6. A couple of the cars have been serviced recently and have a Porsche warranty (2 years remaining). Both are being sold privately with a recent service and a clean health check from OPC. Is it still worth doing the 111 point check or have someone reputable complete a PPI?

Answering the questions:
1. Consider buying a policy with Agreed Value then it will negate the need for GAP insurance. A lot of policies cover if the value of the car rises too

4. Everyone has their own opinions on PPF's value but from reading the detailer/PPF installer sites lately, ceramic coating is not usually applied on top of PPF, however some installers seem to offer their own formulation which puts a special coating on.

Good luck!

From bitter experience I would not advise investing in any warranty other than the manufacturer. If you don’t want to self-insure then the Porsche warranty is relatively affordable, and cars that have it in place already are a good option if buying privately.

Points 1 to 4 - These are all valid considerations but.............

Points 5 to 6 - If you are risk averse then an OPC purchase will give you peace of mind. A potential private purchase of an OPC warrantied car is a good move. Have the 111 Inspection carried out regardless. It's £315 and the best 300 nicker you will spend. If anything crops up it will be remedied through its existing warranty before you take ownership.

Buy the best spec/condition/mileage you can realise.

Happy hunting!!
