Well, I was quite surprised to arrive home today to find my car floating 10 inches off the ground. Very strange.....

Only kidding!! I have been playing with my cars air jacks again. The neighbours think I'm mad :silly:, especially the chap in the posh DB9 Volante who hates getting his hands dirty on cars.

That's a rather large bottle of compressed air, do you have to carry it around with you?

I would if I wanted to jack my car up at the track. I haven't been needing to do this though as I can't take a spare set of wheels as I don't trailer the car. I could get a much smaller bottle but that would only be good for a few lifts. The big one means I can do about 30 lifts, or something like that. The plan is to have a trailer to tow the 911 on one day, I would keep the heavy gas bottle on that I guess. Mind you, the big bottle does sit OK on the passenger seat!

Couldnt you use a small tank compressor to make your own lifts - 12 volts ones must be available.... or do you fill your own bottle anyway ?

How long does it take to lift the car like that? Could be a fun way to amuse yourself and bewilder onlookers in traffic jams

I don't know about the compressor idea. My mate has a E30 M3 touring car and that has air jacks (although his uses 4 stilts/jacks, mine has just 3). When I rang him for advice he said that race teams tend to use gas bottles. I don't know if that's true of not.

The gas is nitrogen. I lease the bottle from BOC (British Oxygen) for something like 50 quid a year, then I pay for refills at about 25 quid if memory serves (I haven't had to refill it yet). I have an account with them and their depot is 10 minutes from my house. Mind you, I can seemingly do loads of lifts with the big bottle. I suppose a diver's size bottle may only be good for 5-10 lifts, I have no idea. When I get round to buying a trailer, the air jacks/gas bottles/second set of wheels and tyres I have will come into their own.

I have just ordered some AP Racing safety stopper things that sit 'round each jack to stop the car collapsing on me when I'm under it. These cost a whopping £65+VAT each from Demon Tweeks and I needed to buy 3 of them! They look wicked though with "AP Racing" painted in big letters on the side. I am such a tart.

It can take about 5 seconds! But I do it slowly (over 20-30 seconds) because the pressure in the system is 400 PSI (a bit more than the 30-35 PSI in your tyres!!). I have been told that if you blast the nitrogen into the system, it is possible for the jacks to break resulting in the them exploding and the jacks being fired through the roof of the car and wedging in the pits' loft space.....

I have never owned a GT3 or GT3 RS sadly. But I have had lots of passenger rides in them. I haven't driven either of them though......until some nice PHer gives me the keys to his some time......

There are 1 or 2 blokes out there who have both a GT3 RS and a 993 RS. John Probert and Andrew Baughan spring to mind. John isn't so keen on his GT3 RS compared to the 993 RS. He reckons it is too big and heavy). However Andrew likes both of his cars.

I had Glenn McMenamin out in my car at Bedford the other week. He has a Manthey'd Mk2 GT3. We both agreed that my car feels smaller and more wieldy with better turn in, but it is slower. There is no difference in braking. My car happens to be very loud as well (no carpets/different induction system/loud exhaust) which gives a great impression of speed! Glenn's GT3 seemed much more refined despite its loud exhaust. It's horses for courses when choosing between these cars.

Seeing as the Nitrogen tank fits in the car, how's about getting some speed up on a road then jacking yourself up...? Get some bigger pistons in there and give it full pressure and you've got a built in 'Turbo Boost' system Knight Rider style...!

It might help me overtake folks at track days who refuse to move over for anyone!
