The 964 turbo - Expert knowledge please
Discussion
I recently read in Total 911 that people refer to this car as the 965 "incorrectly".
As someone who has referred to this car for a very long time as the 965 I just want to check whether the journalist was wrong.
I've seen and heard the car referred to as the 965 in so many documents, and by many people I regard as experts. I would appreciate any informed views.

No experts have replied yet so can inexpert people like me chip in...OK. This is always good for a pub argument. There are parts numbers for the car with a 965 designation so Porsche clearly associate 965 with that particular 911. Whether they formally used it in the way 993 or 996 are used is another matter.
Personally it makes sense to use 965 as short-hand for 964 Turbo. If you can have 944 Turbo or 951 then why not 965? Everyone knows what you mean.

According to Paul Frere's book the "965" was a still- born turbo project, and the 964 Turbo is not it.
So strictly I believe it is incorrect to refer to the 964 turbo as a 965. However, since almost everyone knows what you mean by it, I don't think it matters much
