Afternoon all (especially all those I met at Porsche Festival).

Just upgraded the exhaust to sports exhaust, and am now considering a chip upgrade. Can anyone tell me who to use and what their experience has been so far?

Will be getting a Chips Away session booked soon to get rid of the unsightly bumps in the front bumber soon - thanks to Diver (from Chips Away) for the great and impartial advice - good to meet you!!

What do you think a chip upgrade will achieve? Do you track the car?

Good point. If I understand the blurb the chips people put out, the basic premise is that the manufacturers chip the cars to cater for a wide range of criteria (such as petrol types, and that with chipping you get the best of all worlds (which sounds a bit far fetched) such as better 0 to 60, top speed and even mpg (not that this is really relevant given the point of chips!!). Just wanted to check this out.

As far as your question - mainly for road use, but also do a number of high speed "blats" across the Continent and am planning a couple of track days. If you think that there are better performance features to look at, please advise!!

Thanks for a quick reply wolfie

I've got a Fabspeed Induction Kit and this combined with a BMC F1 certains sounds 'fast' personally I don't think it does much from a performance POV, it doesn't feel any faster. I tried it out at Spa in May, comparing Kemmel VMAX speeds, both then and in Sept 2004 (before fitting the kit and PSE) and I was still hitting 150mph.

With this improved breathing it should benefit from a nice remap. The downside is I fail most of the noise tests on UK tracks....life's a bitch sometimes.

The only other 'upgrades' I've fitted are Pagid RS29 pads all round....after all it's nice to stop occasionally and when you have reduced brake efficiency on Blanchemont you know you need to do something about it!!!!!

£550 for 10bhp/10lb/ft or £3499 or 20bhp/15lb/ft I think they are having a laugh! You can get 10bhp extra running on SUL on a freezing cold winter's day!

It looks like I can get a 19bhp increase for a shade under £300 with Super Chips. Anyone tried this?

PMSL probably more than 10bhp on SUL.

Rolling roads have an accuracy tolerance of more than 10/320 anyway. Unless the car is turbo charged, forget chips/re-maps.

Gains from chipping a N/A motor are generally insignificant unless you've had other mods carried out like head work/cams/exhaust (manifold etc), intake etc. Don't forget the "carrera performance pack" only increases power by around 10% and look at the cost of that! Admittedley the price is inflated because it's a factory kit but a lot of work has to be out into a NA engine to get a reliable 10% increase.

I'd suggest improving the handling/braking of the vehicle. Improved handling and braking will be much more effective than a 5-10% increase in power on both road and track.

Agreed, a very expensive option but while only giving a 10% increase it also moves the power band giving a more linear delivery. No increase in torque however make it a package I`m not sure I`d spec given the chance again. There is the warrenty issue though which covers the works conversion.

Any prices for the AMD hand held computer device , the name of which eludes me......??

AMD @ Brands made what I thought was a very interesting point. They said that as my 3.6 996 was a fly-by-wire throttle their re-map made the throttle reaction far more immediate and responsive. Seeing that is one of my complaints I was impressed. 15% torque increase also BTW. £850+vat though!

My 2 cents.

I've always seen very little point in re-maps. They cost too much for very, very little in return. You also run the risk of detonation, especially if the new map relies on the consistant use of high octane fuel.

I think you will see more power by spending your money on a performance exhaust system. Or if you're feeling brave removing the cats and installing test pipes. You can usually save weight with after market exhaust systems, thus improving power to weight and not forgetting the fact that you will also reduce the weight hanging off the back of your porker.

JPF-40 I do feel brave enough,i tried the de- cat pipes on my old boxster but found that i had to change the standard back box as it just couldnt handle the extra gases,so i put a janspeed on and the power difference was nothing short of great it was a 2.5 but was as quick as a 3.2 in mid range ,the only downside was it was just to loud.I have a factory sports system on my 996C2 320 bhp model. My question is if i put the de cat pipes on mine will i have to change the back box for a stainless steel one

It makes sense to remove the old back boxes, I don't think they were designed to handle the extra heat and noise. And I'm sure most agree that the rear boxes are where you are most likely to save weight too.
