Another boring week at the grindstone begins, so I assume we're all sat browsing the classifieds again smile

I really like my 981 CGTS; I've really enjoyed learning its dynamics on track, I'm getting quicker each time and don't feel like I'm done with it yet. However, there's a litany of cars that appeal to me and I can't be arsed waiting about doing one in one out.

I always thought a 991.1 GTS would be close to my perfect 911, but on reflection I think it's ultimately going to be too similar. If I went GT3/GT4 of pretty much any variety the CGTS wouldn't get a look in - and neither would the snotter I'd have to buy for when I wanted to do mundane stuff. Given the 991.2 introduced really strong turbocharged engines to the cooking models, most people saying it was an all around better car than the .1 anyway, and with the possibility of either a 7-speed manual or a newer gen PDK, could this be a decent sidekick to a Cayman?

Has anyone owned both? Or done something similar? Do you find in practice you end up just using one car all the time and the other sits idle?

Neither are or would be used for commuting or anything serious - they're both just toys.

I would have thought they are too similar - in so far as they are both the same generation, mainstream road cars.
Yes, different configurations, and you could have a manual and an auto, but for fun there are greater contrasts.

A contemporary road car, plus a classic aircooled, or, track focussed toy would surely provide a broader appreciation of Porsche’s history or race capabilities.

Fair enough. So perhaps a GT3, or something else more extreme from another manufacturer to go alongside the 981? That would slot the 981 into duties that are anything other than track work then I guess... which does seem a bit of a waste given it's fairly capable and doesn't break the bank to track.

Point taken though that for day to day where the cars are at 10% of their capabilities, the 981 and 991.2 are are not going to feel hugely different, engine aside.

I'm in an odd place on the GT3s as I'm really not a fan of the 996 looks... I just don't want one if that makes sense. The 997 would be ideal but they feel expensive given they're on price parity with the 991.1 and, engines issues and its identical interior to the current car aside, they would be hard to ignore for the same money? And the 991.2 is probably too expensive. Tough one!

The 991.1 GT3 will eventually become the cheapest GT3 of all. The engine reputation and auto-only will see to that once warranties can't be extended.

A 991 GTS would be far too similar to the Cayman. Wouldn't you want something completely different, like a 360 Ferrari, Morgan Aero 8, or even an early Elise for a lightweight (<800kg) tactile road experience.
