When I bought my 355 a month ago, part of my justification was that I would sell my 993 C2S and buy an old volvo or something which would cost f all to run. So I took the Porker to a local indie dealer for a quote. They said 23k. It had done 89k miles but is in great condition, FSH etc. This price was in view of the fact that it needed about £2.5k of work (discs and pads all round, suspension bits etc). So I decided to get the work done (with the same dealer) and then sell privately - looking for about 27/28k.

To cut a long story short having had the work done (about 1500 was parts, 1000 labour) I took the car back again for another valuation, (because I just wanted to get the pain over and done with) and they offered me £21k!! This is one month and 500 miles later having spent 2.5k with them to fix the things they said brought the price down to 23k!!

So they were happy to take my money and then offer me even less, effectively taking 3-4k of the trade value in 4 weeks!!! ' Yeah, you wouldn't believe how the market's suddenly dived' they said. Sure.

I call this cheating and dishonesty

The one HUGE positive is that I've decided to keep the 993 coz it ain't worth selling anymore - so in the end I'm actually quite happy. and they'll NEVER ever see me again for servicing etc. Or several mates I've told.

Anybody else had similar rip-off experiences?

We can't name and shame here, so it needs to be strictly ANON re dealer names.

However, one Vauxhall dealer once tried to remove the engine from my Lotus Carlton for 'a look' to see if they could fix a problem that turned out to be fixed largely by new iginition leads... the bill would have been 9k!!!!

PS Sorry to hear about the C2... I suppose you should have taken the 23k and not got the work done... hindsight is cool, eh?

PPS A friend sold his 964 and bought a 355 the other day. Ohmygawd, that engine note (comp spec Tubi) is something that few 911s can match. I hope you know just what you're missing... as much as I like 993s, the 355 is very special.

The thieving mothers. That car would be at least £5k more on the forecourt and as for the "market suddenly dived", hmmmm, anyone else heard this?

I bought the 355 3 weeks ago (and you're right, it's absolutely amazing to drive and listen to). I've decided to keep the 993 so I can't complain - my wife reckons that was alwatys the plan anyway, but it wasn't, honest! Thanks to my dishjinest dealer I am now one lucky b@stard!

LOL, congrats mate!

Stick a Tubi on the 355 and wind it up to 8.5k... I have driven a 355 F1 before and even that didn't prepare me for the full Tubi experience... monumental - or should that be manu-mental (joke for Scuderia Systems customers ).

I think that sometimes buyers just assume they're cheaper and so don't compare to opcs. I don't have an issue with that particularly but I do have a problem with a well known independent I've spent a lot of money with just robbing me blind. And what's more, they couldn't give a toss that you won't go back. All the promises of good service amount to nothing when they show their true colours.

The other thing that upset me was that I had my 3 yr old son with me and waited 1 hr for the guy to tell me that he'd have to call me the following week to give me a price. He could have told me that straight away.

Still angry!!

One of the points people were putting forward is that indies care more,i dont think they care anymore than opc, when it comes down to money not many people do.I have had the same experience from both im affraid, so i cant say i have found one better than the other.Your case does seem like you have come up against a pack of tw.ts but im glad you seem to have resolved the problem, you have two great cars to choose from now instead of one!

Very true, they've done me a favour in the end!

(In the clear this time round given we don`t do any of our own service work !). I think with an independent you do at least have someone to vent your anger towards and (hopefully), reach a compromise with. The Nationals are simply annonymous monoliths with no central point of authority.

For what it`s worth if you are going to sell to a dealer then there isn`t a lot of point in getting remedial work done. The dealer will certainly not pay any more money than you for the work and they can get the jobs done to a standard they are happy with, (be that good or bad !). It`s fair to say that there is also a "floor" below which cars don`t fall beneath regardless of the amount of work needed and so spending an amount on a car doesn`t necessarily increase it`s value by that amount.

Finally be aware that just because you were bid a figure today doesn`t necessarily mean the chap will hand over the same amount tomorrow.
