Thinking on from the PSE thread, what are the best mods to make to a 996 3.4 in terms of BHP per £?

I doubt there are any obvious restrictions, but some mods are bound to release more BHP/torque than others. What gives the best improvement for the least outlay?

The easiest way is to make the car lighter! A C4 cab tip is not the ideal candidate for a quick 996

Not much you can do,,,an air filter and remap could give you another 20 odd bhp....sports exhaust may sound ok, but don't expect any bhp gains..the standard kit is reasonably efficient. It all depends what you want the car for,, I would have thought this was more enjoyable cruiser spec than fast GT.

Yup, mine's brisk rather than rapid, but that suits me. I was just musing if there are any relatively cost effective ways to unleash more power. If I wanted quick I would have gone for a Noble, eh Dan

Not if you can't work a clutch

NA tuning isn't really cost effective beyond a very limited point. You then start having to look at FI etc. You then realise you should have bought a turbo rather than pissing around frankensteining the wrong car

Just my take!

buy the slowest softest crusier-lite 996 and then ask how to make faster?

sell it and buy a manual C2 cab

*cough* I was just thinking aloud

I just wondered if there were some obvious tune ups that represent good value, but it seems I'll just have to save up for a TT.

Or build an Uber Boxster when the kids are bigger

Tuning is seldom ever cost effective imho. Generally its new car time unless you are already at the zenith of a particular model and there's nowhere to step up to.

Sell the kids and get a tiptronic turbo S cabriolet

Now that would be a hoot! With the price of of second hand S's being so low it would be madness not to consider it. How much would it be to overbore a 3.2 and blow it after all.

Not something I'm considering for now, but god would be a hell of a machine.

or get a cat replacement pipe for in-between MOT's. That should do something for performance perhaps..

Ruf recently supercharged an S. Probably one of the Turbo Technics low pressure units (approx 9psi). Pretty sure it was in Evo, a month or two back. It gave 350bhp IIRC.

I dunno - 15k+ by a respectable tuner?

Which is why its not worth it.

Oh I don't know, you could probably get this for 18.5K www.pistonheads.com/sales/51378.htm spend 15K on tuning and you're at or below the price of an equivalent stock 996 cab (It's always gotta be cab for me )with performance that would be approaching the realms of a TT.

As I've said, I'm just thinking aloud here but I always thought the Boxster S has so much more potential than Porsche give it in stock form.

And then you have a car you paid 33k for thats worth 18k and is more likely to suffer some form of mechanical failure/require constant diddling by the supplier.

If you want to be that silly why not just get a honda engined Elise with a supercharger. Now thats a quick car for not a lot!
