944: gearbox rebuild?
Discussion
I was just wondering if the noise often heard in most 944 at low revs - below, say, 2000 rpm in any gear - was normal or if some of the gearbox pinions had decided to retire.
I recently talked to a nice chap with a 928 GTS (pics of the meeting) who told he had the same noise thing on his transaxle, and that Porsche told him it was normal.
I'm not sure what to think - my humble S2 is definitely not a GTS!
, so I wondered if any of you had an idea.
In the title I mention "rebuild" because if it ever needs it I'd be glad if I could keep my gear box because it's written on it that it was cast the same day as my birthday.
(edited: Sorry, yes, that's bloody ridiculous
)
In advance, thanks for your comments

Yep, gears whirring.
I'm glad your does the same as well
- I just hope it's normal and it's not a bad sign...
edited: all the S2 I've been in yet make that bloody unpleasant noise
.
But then they were all well above their 60k miles: do you think they made that noise when new??

Gear chatter at low revs is common, it is just the torque impulses of the engine shaking all the non-selected gears, that's all. Take a drive in a 946RS if you want to hear it clearer, or alternatively just drive the car without the rear carpet. Constant whine that gets louder the faster you go is a worry and indicates worn bearings or ring & pinion damage. Knocking from pull away points to worn driveshaft joints, can be proven by jacking up and lowering the car, the noise will disappear for a few miles afterwards as the grease is redistributed into the working area of the joint. Nuff said?
