The 718 six-speed is often referred to being 'long-geared'. Does the same apply to seven-speed of the 991 Carerras, or are these six 'short' ratios and the 7th an overdrive?

Both cars have reasonable torque (420NM and 450NM respectively) so even if long there should be a good pick up of speed when road driving.

Anyone have expereince of both?

The 991.2 T is shorter.
From memory it topped out in late 60’s in 2nd gear.
I’d a 981 GT4 which was definitely longer, how much l don’t recall, which perhaps tells it’s own story…

I wouldn't worry about the long gear reviews.

Yes, likewise, my driving style never had an issue with the gearing that some people mention.

However, I did find the 7-Speed much better on the 991.2 than the 991.1, and more usable torque in the lower/mid-range.

In fact, quite a nice, easy manual to use in towns and cities. 7th is for motorway cruising.

When I bought my 981 Spyder, I rocked up at RPM with funds to do the revised gear ratio pinion mod...and lightweight flywheel... they politely refused (?!) and suggested I own it and get used to it as is first..
3 years on nearly and I don't feel the need to go back and get it done.
Yes they are longer geared in 2nd and 3rd... but I'm getting all the noise, feels, gear changes, revs and punch I need...
I think it depends on what you're used to, have owned and prefer.
I came from an S2000, which has a superb gearchange action and closely stacked ratios... I'm still VERY happy with what a 981 offers.

The only way around the long gearing is to get an auto. It’s not that big of a deal especially if you use 1st as an accelerative gear, but you’re always left wondering what it would be like to wring the thing out.

The auto gearing is slightly shorter but not by much really. I don't have the exact numbers but it's something like 76 mph vs 83 mph in the manual for top of 2nd in a 718.
