Hi,
I seem to recall/ Imagined(?) the reference "White Giant" to a tuned 911 in a magazine/s, in the late 80s/ early 90s? It was obviously white and bassed on a turbo(?), I think it broke the double ton. I can't remmember the tuner or the magazine but it was likely 911 & PW, World Sports Cars or maybe Top Car(?).

Does anyone know anything about this or have I been dreaming again? I would check the magazine but all my old mags are in storage.

I've looked on google but only found a reference to the 917

Moby Dick

I think the car might have been a flat nose...

Who made this moby dick then?

I seem to remmember they achieved the top speed on the autobahn.

Thanks

I think it was made by that Porsche.

Covered quite extensively in Paul Frere's book, iirc.

Weren't the Kremer brothers responsible for the advancement of the 935, over and above Porsche's own development?
I thought they were the instigators of the Moby Dick project - they were certainly more successful racing 935's than Porsche's own teams...

I think you are right of course.

Hold on while I put a Post-It on my monitor, with note to self reading "Don't post on things you know eff-all about"

I remember that article well!!!
It was in "Fast Lane", a magazine which is long gone. It was a turbo engine (might even have been twin turbo) running in a narrow 911 body, much more aerodynamic than the 3.2 Carrera body, might have been a 964 body. The mirrors were tiny, to cut drag, but had to be on the car as it was road legal!

It was owned by a guy called "Siggi", who made his money in T-shirts !!!

Can't help with the exact issue I'm afraid, but there's always loads of copies of "Fast Lane" up for sale on Ebay...

The 935/78 'Moby Dick' was the Porsche factory's ultimate effort at exploiting the group 5 regulations. It was capable of 225mph.

However, I'm pretty sure only 1 was built, and it is still owned by Porsche. I also very much doubt it was ever used on the road.

The WeiB(S) Riese was an RS Tuning creation and was involved in a shootout which included the Ruf CTR in '87/88. It beat the CTR by 0.1s in the 1/4 mile posting 11.6 @ 133.5mph and by 0.1s to 100mph @ 7.2s. It snapped a fan belt at high speed and was unable to do a max run (unlike the CTR) it had 520hp and wore a gutterless 930 type body with a fibreglass front spoiler and stock 930 rear and aero mirrors with some pretty garish 5 "spoke" star wheels (which look like 17" in the photo I have. At the time RS (who used to be Ruf's head engineeR) was trying to prove a point and was confident his wide body would overcome its obvious aerodynamic advantage and beat the CTR - it eventually did 216mph (from memory.) Its cost was reported as £79200 (in Motor mag article)
Edit: The above may not actually be correct, in David Vivian's book Porsche 911 he covers the shootout I decribe above (which was actually first covered in Motor mag - but lost that years ago)he has a picture of the "White Giant" car on the pages within the story but I am not certain it was this car which was involved in the shootout, it may have been produced afterwards. Anyway, I am pretty sure about the 216mph speed and the bullish RS comments about the aerodynamics.

The White Giant
I was reading this thread and I recall the white giant. September 1994 911 & Porsche World.
It was built by RS tuning . Top speed of 216mph. It was was the response to Alois Ruf's Yellow Bird that is a very famous car. The Yellow bird must have played 17 - 18 years ago when road and track did a top car shoot out.

The Giant - It was a wide bodied turbo. 3386cc - 98mm bore and 74.4 mm stroke pumping out 580hp @ 6900rpm and 464 lb/ft at 5500 rpm.

It had shaved rain gutters, low profile mirrors and that was it. Not bad considering the drag of the rear guards.

If any one wants more specs I can post the article. I might not be a moby dick, but as far as road cars go a car to enter into the realm of myths.

And that s why I can remeber at the drop of the hat such an article.

Myself, never had the commitment to commit that much money to a car. I have had a few miles in a ruf 930 turbo around a race circuit and that s it.

Down here in Tasmania Australia we have a competition called Targa Tasmania. A guy called Jim Richards has won it a number of times in a porsche. That is only half the story. Some of the porsches that have featured over the years are awesome. There was a 1973 RSR with Wide rear guards running an ex Le-mon engine. Absolutely awesome. You see this thing leave a stage start, an "old porsche" as some people would see it, errupt like only you guys would know, throw the road back at you, the starter. There is nothing like a worked to the hilt naturally aspirated flat six. So if anyone out thee with a fist full of cash wants the ultimate driving adventure bring the car down and see how it copes.

As in Stephen Richard's dad? They run father and son in the Aussie V8 saloons. Cracking driver is Jim.
