996: MOT without back boxes / mufflers - muffler delete
Discussion
Hi everyone,
Wanted to see if anyone has any experience getting an MOT done on a vehicle without back boxes / mufflers fitted and if they know of any friendly MOT garages around Hampshire (Basingstoke) or Reading (or even further afield) which might be able to help.
Long story short, my 166,000 mile 996 decided it did not want mufflers anymore and the accordion joint rusted through on both sides of the factory mufflers. As it’s a daily, the quick fix was to add muffler-delete end pipes (I don’t mind the drone too much, pairs well with deftones through the bose sound system) but now I am due an MOT and weary of the fact that 1. emissions tests appear to be getting harder for these cars given the age of their systems and 2. The lack of back boxes.
So if anyone has any good leads on garages which might be friendly about the situation I would much appreciate it. Alternatively if anyone has any 996 sports mufflers / back boxes lying around that they would like to shift, I would be happy to take them off your hands.

Not a 996, but my 991.2 RS went through the MOT fine at my local OPC without any silencers (side and centre box bypass pipes). The MOT is more concerned with emissions as that’s measurable with equipment, so as long as you still have the catalytic converters you should be fine. I think technically the tester can fail if the noise is excessive but I’ve never heard of this happening.
In 25 years odd of having noisy exhausts I’ve never had an MOT issue due to volume.

Find an MOT station that doesn't do MOT's on the weekend and book their last slot on Friday.Wanted to see if anyone has any experience getting an MOT done on a vehicle without back boxes / mufflers fitted and if they know of any friendly MOT garages around Hampshire (Basingstoke) or Reading (or even further afield) which might be able to help.

I once managed to get my 355 MOT'd without catalytic converters (they had disintegrated so just replaced them with pipes, still had the stock muffler though, so not obnoxiously loud). MOT vs. TÜV is one of the reasons I wish I still lived in the UK .....
Fear not, the DVSA in the UK are fast catching up with the TUV. Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
