upgraded rims for 996 twin Turbo

I'm looking to upgrade my 996 TT standard 11Jx18 inch rear rims which run 295/30 ZR18 tyres to something wider to fill out the guards. Say 12 inch wide on 315/30ZR18 tyres. Does any one know what is the widest rim that will still fit under the rear Turbo guards and nor scrap. The car has standard height but also intend to lower it 20mm, but with the same spring rate.

Be careful with this. Although the GT2 has 315 width tyres it also has rolled wheel arches to allow for them. IMHO I'd stick with the 295s. Rods (modded 996tt owner on PH) and I also had an interesting conversation with a someone who regularly drives mega powerful 911s at 190mph+ and unless you are going on track frequently he recommends sticking with 18 inch alloys for better road handling.

thanks for the advice - i didn't know the GT2 had rolled inner guards - thats the sort of thing you don't get to here about in Magazines.
Any experience with spacers in the hub - whats the maximum that can be used before scraping becomes a problem

Sorry, don't know about that. My car is standard except for an alloy gearshift linkage. I think rods may have spacers on his car though.

You would need to be careful not to alter the gearing if you change tire sizes, or it may affect the operation of the 4wd.

Avoid 19s, they are strictly for show, smaller sidewall makes ride worse and may actually grip less if you do not have suspension optimised to use the extra stiffness. Before someone mentions 997's, they were designed for 19s with bigger overall tire diameters, changed gearing etc, so they don't need the rubber-band profile tyres.

Hi guys sorry to hijack the thread but I also found out that
the TTX 50 has also got rolled inner guards I only found out when I went to fix a minor dent on the rear wing.

I've just fitted 19's on my TT with 315/25 on the back. The rolling radius is the same as std.

The wheels fill the arches perfectly and do not touch the edge of the arch. However I too want to lower it and reckon that at that stage I would have to get them rolled.

The ride is more jittery but now that I've taken a couple of lbs out it's super-fine.......

Besides it looks the dogs danglies
