Tyre Advice for 968CS Wanted

I've struggled to find answers amongst the masses of hearsay, received opinion and prejudice around tyres.

I need fronts (225/45 17) and rears (255/40 17) for my 968CS. I only use it for 2 - 3k miles p.a, but probably 6 or 7 track-days p.a. So long-life is not as important as good stability under hard use and decent wet weather performance.

I don't really want to run R spec tyres on the road - the thought of Mrs SS7 understeering into a ditch at 10mph on cold tyres doesn't bear thinking about.

Those nice people at Micheldever have the following in stock. Does anyone have real experience of these tyres, or have any other comments?

Michelin Pilot Sport N2 £509- Is it worth the extra?

Pirelli Rosso non-N £467 Why is their nomenclature so confusing? I'm not sure this is the optimum tyre for me - their website talks about long life

Kumho KU15 £324 Cheap, Looks like a very aggressive tread pattern, could be good for dry weather, but wet....?

Bridgestone S02 N3 £399.31 Oldie but goodie, supposed to be better on-track than the S03's.

They don't currently have Yoko's or Toyo's in the correct size - I'm not too bothered about getting the 'N' badge on the side-wall.

Out of the 3 you've selected I'd go for the SO-2s. Had them on my E30 and they are simply awesome - only downer is that they're not the most durable of tyres.

I've just put 4 S02's on my 944 Turbo (exactly the same size as yours) and they really are the business. They're becoming rarer than hen's teeth now though so finding 4 could be a challenge !

I owned a CS for 4 years and found that a combination of Pirelli Assimetricos and Directionale's suited the cars balance brilliantly, even on track. They were very progressive and very forgiving. I would thoroughly recommend them. Cant' remember whether it was Assimietricos or Directionales that went on the front. Micheldever will know though as they usually stock both.

Nice and stiff sidewall, very sticky once you warm them up. Progressive handling - you get plenty of talk-back from the tyres before they are about to let go.

I have done 90 laps of the Ring this year in the 928 (8m:xx something BTG and still have 2mm left on the rears (5K overall)...

The cost was £330 fitted for 225/50/16 and 245/45/16. My guess is that 17s will be similarly priced.

They do squirm a little when they are brand new but the drive out to teh ring is normally enough to get them working nice.

but like Alex said.. Best all round value for money. I run them on everything I have.. except the golf cos they dont do a 14" in it!

Sorry If this is a silly question - but if you buy them online - where do you get them fitted?

Do places like quickfit do it - do they charge?

I got the tyres for £250 inc VAT, delivery is usually free, but I paid something like £15 to get them delivered next day because I needed them sharpish at the time, and then went to Elite ([url]www.elitedirect.com[/url] in Raynham, Essex, which charged me something like £15 per wheel to fit and balance them. Alternatively, my local Universal Tyre (020 8858 2882) at 87 Blackwall Lane in Greenwich, SE10 0AP offered to do it for £10 per tyre inc VAT.
