718 Boxster Outdoor Cover

Firstly, I appreciate that this topic has been discussed widely on here and other forums, but I’m still unsure of the direction I should go in, so would welcome your sagely advice.

I would like to purchase a weather proof cover over my driveway parked Boxster. It is in a sheltered environment, so I’m not too worried about wind and the cover coming loose, but I am confused about material choices.
I ‘think’ I’ve narrowed it down to either the Storm Covers Outdoor Breathable or the Classic Additions Ultimate Waterproof, but I’m not sure if a fleece lined or neoprene type material is best? Or, if I should consider another great option?

I should mention that I’m not interested in the genuine Porsche Cover, as I don’t want to advertise my car.

I dislike car covers but as I have 3 toy cars and garage space only for 2 I was forced to buy a cover with the UV damage the recent weather inflcits on my car.

I went for the Classic Additions Ultimate cover. I have only put it on once as only received it this week but inital impressions compared to covers I have had years ago is that this one is more elastic and fits snug to the car. It is soft inside and out. The straps are better designed with pockets for the clips. Time will tell but first impressions are good.

The problem with outdoor car covers is that you have to put them on a CLEAN car- any dust under the cover will cause damage as the cover moves about in the wind. Also, any moisture underneath the cover can also cause issues.

It is a pain. There are some steps you can take to minimise the downsides. I use a fusso 12 month base wax topped off with a fusso wax applied a few times a year. This creates a sacrificial layer between cover and car.

I use a rinseless detailer spray before putting the cover on, fine in dry weather but again a pain fully ensure car is dry in wetter weather.

Lastly buying a quality fitted, breathable cover limits movement on the car and allows moisture to escape. That said it is best to pull the cover back periodically in the wetter months to help the cover breath and moisture to evaporate.

They are a pain but the alternative is uv damage to paint and plastics, increased cabin temperatures spoiling the materials and bird damage. I’m less worried about rain and probably won’t use it so much in the winter.

I am conscious of the potential risks of a cover on anything but a perfectly clean car, but as I have conifer trees and an army of local pigeons, I think it’s the better option.
I am probably going to get the car ceramic [Gtech) coated, before I start using the cover. Do we think this will give adequate protection, as Kitt has experienced with his Fusso wax?

That will be fine re the ceramic and you can always use a spray wax before putting it on to be double sure. I'm happy with the classic additions cover as it is stretchy and doesn't move about like you see with some covers.

Pigeons are my enemy too and equally high on my motivation to cover the car against any pitfuls. With the Sun baking their mess into the paint I run the real risk of damage if I am not around for a couple of days.

They do require more work / thinking as mentioned above but I've used classic additions covers for years now. Their ultimate cover is about £200 or thereabouts and as long as the car is clean and dry when it goes away it protects it very well. Again as mentioned above just make sure you have a really good coating on the paint in the form of wax or ceramic as this helps keep the paint slick, reduces friction and any moisture will sit on the wax instead of the paint. Somehow even when the cover looks absolutely soaked through the it is still bone dry underneath. I do try and let the car air out every now and again throughout the winter months and I think this helps.
I've replaced the covers every 18 months or so, still a lot cheaper than storage or a garage!
