Just had the Box serviced at the OPC. Fine. Unsurprisingly after three years and lots of track days the front pads are well worn. 10,000 miles left in 'em the mech said: Errr...don't think so...not when a couple of thousand miles is going to be on track!

So. Fine over winter. But they're recommending that the discs be skimmed when the pads are changed - other than that the discs are OK.

So: NO WAY am I letting Porsche change the discs/pads at OPC prices - especially when I need two new front tyres and an alignment job doing as well.

Which Independent in the S.E. would PHers recommend for the job? I want someone trusted and respected to the job right, who will use only Porsche (or OEM) parts and who will be cost effective to ask to do it.

So far I'm thinking Northway Porsche in Reading....reasonably convenient for me. Anyone else in that neck of the woods?

Thanks for any recommendations...

How about Peter Tognola in Datchet? ( Near Windsor) not far away...does a good job in my experience.

Hi,unless you are totally useless with cars(no insult meant, some people are some not)i would recommend having a go yourself, they are very easy to do.
If you do a search on google(change brakes on boxster) there is usually a step by step guide on all porsche models.I did them on my 993 and was amazed how easy it was.
Otherwise if you are not confident i would also recommend JZ Machtech.

Hi angry - yup I am fairly useless with the spanners - once, long ago, I did my own car maintenance because I had to. These days, especially with the fact I then do track days and brake like buggery shortly before hard things, I like a pro to look things over...

Its also the problem that the discs need skimming - they have quite a pronounced ridge on their circumference from the aforementioned enthusiastic track driving...

GT1 hertsey are good
Re. skimming the disks - probably betterjust to replace them, particularly if they see lots of track work. They are not expensive if you look around a bit

A job like this i'd do myself, anything i can't (or won't) do i give to Ray Northway. He's never let me down.
Great service at great prices (though they're always busy as a result!).

I had NEW discs and pads fitted to the front (Porsche parts) for £300 by my local indie. TBH, I wouldn't bother skimming the old ones, if you use it on for track days, thinner disks will heat up and fade quicker.

One word of warning, it will feel like you have NO brakes for the first few miles while they bed in

Aye Caramba!

Had the new pads thing before, though. Can be, errr, disconcerting to say the least!

If you think pads are bad, you wait till you do pads and discs together

Mind you, when they bed in Could be worth getting them to flush the fluid through with the money you save while she's there if you do track days. Brakes will feel absolutely sublime once that lot is done

Had the fluid changed last year - but might well get it done whilst at it anyway.

I love it when the system is at its peak: brake pedal feel like there's a brick under it and the car slows like you threw a big anchor out the back..

Don, when you change the fluid,as you do track your car, it's probably a good idea replace the standard spec stuff with racing blue or castrol SRF instead.

This will ensure you keep a firmer pedal on track as the brakes heat up. Absolutely fine for road use, it should really be changed annually rather than bi-annually for the standard fluid.

Thanks for that, mate. Yep. Might get Northway to do that at the same time - ready for next year's season.

Ah well. I've had my fun and now I'd best pay for it!

Got to get me some "trick rubber" for next year, too. Oh yes. So I can chase you a bit better...
