I've found the perfect spec 996TT, right colour, low miles etc, but it is not fitted with Sat Nav, whilst not a major problem for me (would have been good for European trips though) I get the impression that come resale time the lack of Sat Nav can seriously narrow the cars appeal, and thus reduce its value. Is this true? and if so, what figure would you put on the price differential between identical spec cars (one with and one without Sat Nav ? )
I get the impression that PCM is used as yet another excuse by dealers to knock you down on resale value.
In terms of practicality - sure the official PCM looks nicely integrated, but then I've seen a lot of complaints about out-of-date map, poor upgrade capability and general high cost.
I came to the conclusion that it makes better sense to buy a 3rd party satnav, particularly when I can transfer ti between cars and replace it easily after a couple of years when technology has moved on...

Agree with all the above sentiments. It SHOULDN'T matter whether the car has PCM or not. Unfortunately, IMO it really does. Dealers will definitely knock you down on price if you want to part ex. If you try to resell it privately, a lot of people won't give it a second look.

I think with a relatively new car where PCM (if fitted), will be up to the mark and working well, then lack of it will reduce the potential market for the vehicle.
This is especially the case with something like a Cayenne. Take out the Sat Nav & you`re left with a massive void in the dash. 2 rotary knobs on the radio look a tad bare and the whole interior looks gloomy.
With an older car where, arguably, something like tom tom would actually be an improvement over the factory fitted alternative then you could argue your corner.

If someone is buying a 996TT now, and doesn't plan to sell it for at least a couple of years, then surely PCM won't reduce the resale value (in 2+ years) that much?
Following this logic, today's buyer should only care about PCM if they want it for its functionality/looks now, not really worrying about resale value.
PCM may look nice, but if it doesn't actually work as well as 3rd party satnavs, then why bother... Porsche interiors have always looked more boring than other cars...

As the cars age and PCM becomes more and more outdated and is finally no longer supported (no new Navigation CDs) it will actually become something that reduces the value of the car.
Who wants a ruddy great screen on the dash that's actually no use!
Whilst you can still get new Navigation CDs it will always be worth something, though.

Becker make some very nice units, single DIN, Radio, CD, Interchanger, MP3 and Bluetooth which look just like OEM.
I had a 7945 Traffic Pro fitted in my 996 and it'll do all that PCM does...just better. OK, so you don't get pretty pictures on the screen (the new model does) but you're supposed to be watching the road anyway for speed scameras etc.

because without it the dash looks a bit naff IMO and 3rd party systems don't look neat and integrated and the PCM screen is good for controlling stereo and phone functions too

this question is best aimed at dealers or prospective buyers like me - I won't be touching one without PCM2 and would advise another buyer to knock at least £2k off for a non-PCM 996TT
I agree it is an expensive option though but given the high std equipment its the only extra box that needed ticking

Sat Nav - like any option on a 996TT bar the Performance Pack - doesn't make the car more or less valuable in £££ terms, what it does do is make the car easier to sell, as it will probably be more attractive to more people.
If I was looking to buy a 996TT & someone tried to add £2k just for sat-nav on an identical age/mileage/spec car then I would just laugh at them.
If Sat-Nav added a significant amount of £££ value to a car it would be listed in Glasses guide as such.

I don't add £2k for satnav, I assume any 996TT has it when valuing that car normally. If PCM is missing I would want to pay £2k less as it will be much harder to shift to a lot of people
