Hi, I bought an Evo 8 Last week for a weekend/trackday car WOW! This car goes around corners faster than anything I've experienced the grip is out of this world.I know everyone will be thinking not pure sports car and they would rather be controling the car without the use of the active diffs and yaw control gismo's on the Evo,the thing is the whole car feels light,nible and the suspension and brakes are top draw the suspension is loads better than many aftermarket set ups and the brakes are 320mm Brembo's standard.The whole car feels very balanced and well set up.I know it's no Porsche but for 14-24k for an MR the value for money is unbeatable.I can't wait to get it on the track I got a track day booked soon.I feel only very top 911 drivers would be able to get there 911 around a circuit quicker.Before you all say jap crap and all the rest go for a test drive in one and come back and tell me what you think.They have a reputation of being petty tuff as well if not cheaply modded.I know my 993tt is top quality but for a fraction of the cost (16k buys you a 2 year old car FQ300hp)I'm having loads of fun!Were not talking straight line power more the twistys and bends.Can't wait to get it on Silverstone!
An excellent plan! I got myself a WRX STi for the same purpose. I've tracked my 996 a few times, but I always think of the damage I could cause by hitting a wall in it (and being uninsured), so now I take out the Subie. They are ridiculously quick for the money you spend.
The brakes are nowhere near Porsche quality but I've replaced the standard Brembo system with uprated rotors and pads, and run it on semi-slicks. It can keep up with 993s, 944 turbos etc. Parts are cheap and readily available so it's easy to modify.
The worst thing has been all the sh1t I've been given from my BMW/Porsche/Caterham friends about the BLING factor of the car. My girlfriend refuses to drive in it at all (she says it is so tasteless), but I think they are all missing the point.
It is such a blast to drive, and I can save the Porsche for blats through the hills and evenings out and about, so it is keeping the mileage down, which is good.

I bought an MR 340 at end of last year, had it modded to 380bhp/370ft/lbs, Cusco race coilovers, uprated Brembos.. car would lap Brands Indy almost as quick as my GT3 RS.!!
WRC at Silverstone, do an upgrade for a standard MR300 to take it to 400bhp+ , not sure of price, but prob less than 5k.. eek

I had an EVO V putting out about 340bhp, it was the GR spec so AYC was included. I sold it after about 4-5 months. I just found the car boring.
It looked amazing, bright yellow and very "in yer face", it sounded good too with an HKS Hiper system and lots of wooshing from the HKS BOV and induction kit.
Thing is I had to go SOOOO fast to get it to do anything remotely involving that I found it, quite frankly, dangerous on the road.
4,000 mile servicing was a royal pain in the a55.
I prefer a realy, involving sportscar. Its not about how fast you can do a lap, it's about how much fun you have doing it and how quick you are comparatively i.e, similar cars, driver skills, etc.,
IMHO any idiot (and this is a generalism, bear in mind I've been an owner too so not being derisory to current owners!) can drive a scoob or evo quick and think they're king of the world! It masks what's really going on and corrects the mistakes, I can't enjoy that... the car is making decisions and adjusting mine! not good for improving your driver skills.
The best thing about it - being based on a blando family saloon I could take 4 passengers in comfort and have room for luggage in the back :-)
I can imagine it being a fun addition to a porker although I doubt I'd use one much past trips to B&Q and Tesco - rest would be in the 911 (when I get it!)

I think Mr Bennett sums it up in Circuit driver magazine, as a car for the playstation generation, but then again there are so many variations to the models that they're probably not comparable anyway!

For the track, probably fine. But you've got to get there. And unless you're going to put it on a trailer under a sheet, that means driving it on a public road. And that means lumping yourself in with every baseball cap wearing, tatooed/multi-pierced knobhead who make up the evo owners club. I had one for 3 weeks, and couldn't cope with the open adulation from the sort of people who I normally only come into contact with when they're robbing my house. Others may be made of sterner stuff.
