My 3 Yr old 3.6 Carrera is due for a service. To cut a long story short my local OPC hasn't got the best of reputations, recently cocked up my cousins car and the service staff are always difficult to deal.

Would you try another or just use an independant?

Has anyone had their car serviced at Specialist cars of Malton?.

Cheers.

It would be interesting to know if their 'hourly rate' is in line with the price of their cars ie a tad firm.

MOD500 uses SCoM for servicing, IIRC. See what he says, maybe email him offsite.

Dom i have a question for you friend. How is it that one can not express a bad opinion about say a specialist but its ok to slag off an opc.In my short time i have seen quite a few posts with the dealer name on it.Is it because the managing d of opc in the uk does'nt give a toss about the opinions of phers and wont sue?But mr small form indi and co will?Just curious

The naming/shaming policy applies to all.

There is perhaps a certain amount of 'leeway' given regarding OPCs as they are official representatives of Porsche and will be dealing with warranty/service issues. The expectations are higher, and so people will complain more frequently and more vocally. That is just a fact of who they are.

PH doesn't give OPCs a hard time or indies an easy time. It simply stops UNREASONABLE criticsm and comment. The playing field isn't level between indies and OPCs as far as a reasonable standard of service is concerned.

Also, the indie comments tend to be more personal for some reason. OPC comments can be vented frustrations towards Porsche GB or a dealer chain, ie far more general. The ones towards indies are more likely to be 'Bill ripped me off, Fred can't turn a spanner to save his life' type comments.

Hope that clarifies. Email me through my profile if you have any more questions as they can hijack threads

All the best
Dom

Ok i posted the at the same time,i hear you and for 90% i agree, but people should be given the same leeway to say i think that garage is crap imho without going in to detail. If that guy can say it about opc center then it should be the same for all.

I do my best to keep abreast of all posts, but if an OPC is getting a slagging, do email me/Daz with the link or 'report abuse'.

IMHO 3yrs is too old to give up on Porsche stamps - why not balance it by taking the car to an OPC once a year to get the absolute minimum service required for the stamp (be very strict in specifying you want the service at the price as listed on their website) and take it to a good indie for everything else.

I have used them for 2 years with no complaints. In fact the last service I had on my 996 was excellent...in fact so good, I bought a new 997 from them!

I think dom has a fair point one persons nightmare is anothers paradise.I do put into question the validity of any specialist or non specialist which over price's their used cars to such an extent that they cost more to buy from them than an official OPC.

This tells me that they have the arrogance to believe that they are as good if not better than an opc.
I have yet to see any porsche specialist offer a warranty that opc do,or a decent loan car,or the state of the art showrooms they offer,so what gives them the right to charge more?

Come re-sale time you will find that paying 34k for a pre-facelift 2002 boxter will result in an instant 10k loss as soon as it leaves the show room, and that is just greed and arrogance on the part of the dealer.

People harp on about the service, the opc prices compared to some specialists does'nt differ that much. There are the other usual pro's and con's and i can except that, but for me i will always look how a dealer prices their stock for an indication of what type of service im going to get.

I used to sell cars i know how it works,i have owned restaurants which turned over in excess of a two million pound's a year,so i know what overheads are,and now i'm selling property,so i do have some understanding why a giant like opc need to charge more.
But i'm sorry, but i will never accept any specialist that operates from industrial estates, uses cheap loan cars and have very few staff.for these dealers to then try and use the OPC argument to over price their used cars is just a joke.

rob05, I apreciate what you are saying, but why should customer service be any different if you are on an "industrial estate" or in a multi million pound dealership? Surely your levels of service are based on the quality and commitment of your staff and the vision and objectives of the management.
Gone are the days when I buy anything from huge department stores or chains, when you are a face being "served" by couldn't care less teenagers, who really don't want to be there and can't be bothered to do any more than they have to (and know absolutely nothing about the product they are selling).
I try as much as possible to give my business to local smaller businesses, where I find the levels of service much better and you can actually enjoy the purchasing experience.
This is also true with car purchases, having bought 10 cars in as many years I never really enjoyed the experience in larger places, it was just a deal. However with a smaller specialists you are normally dealing with a fellow enthusiast, OK the prices may also be a little enthusiastic, but if you know that and are prepared for some good haggling then it adds to the experience.
Personally I have used and will use again smaller specialists for Porsche cars, I have a friendly first name relationship with them, picking up and delivering the car is no issue, they have been extremely generous on goodwill cases. In my view these things mean something and if they cost a little more...who cares.

I think you have missed my main point, which is some specialists have grown too arrogant and feel that they can charge more for their cars because they THINK they offer more,i dont believe that argument.

My local OPC Newcastle does a 120mile round trip to collect my car and i did'nt even buy it from them.
I know most of the staff by name, and i am treated very well. When my car is brought to me its is washed and cleaned, and if i have any problems they are always sorted. And most importanty i have a used warranty that is'nt underwritten by some crapy insurance company.

You talk about enthusiastic people,i disagree again that this is limited to just specialists. If this was the case why do certain specialists over price their cars?
Is'nt the very purpose of specialists to give better value for money all round? How can they do this if they over price certain parts of their business?

You bought a car that really was'nt possible to load up the price on as it was new.For me i think some people out there are very good at being false and use the term enthusiastic as another meaning for good business.IMHO having worked in the motor trade, most of the reasons that you give why anyone would overprice their used cars by thousands won't cut it with me i'm sorry.

My comments are aimed at any specialist that take's the piss and not any one in paticular, having said that i'm sure most people here know who they are.
P.S Henry, i'm glad to inform you you are'nt one of them so you can keep smiling mate!
