Well I'm after a 944S2 and have found a nice one. Its an 89 S2 4 pot engine. runs nice and clean and appears a good solid beast. It has a full service history, BUT, only from 2001. The owner has kept all the bills since he has had it and the previous owner has kept all his as well.
There are about £3000 pounds worth of bills from Brakes, suspension, etc and apparently the front wishbone with bushes costs £500! this job, with MOT and new pads, exhaust bracket and bits and bobs = £1000 !!(TWG Motorsport)

Anyway, the only problem I've got with the car is the speed the starter cranks over. He said he took it back to the garage and they said they all do that!

The starter has been reconditioned, £150 for taking off and refitting. Do they all suffer from slow cranking over when starting the four pot engine ?? (it also has a new battery)

the spare wheel, has a space saver, with a pump supplied with it. Is this correct ??

It appears to be a good genuine and clean car.

there is red paint under the chassis, are they painted all over when new ??

Apart from that it almost perfect, so its on me list.

The porsche specialist at Peterbourough have looked after it.

What do you reckon to the three questions.
thanks.

Slow-ish cranking from the starter compared to other cars is normal.

To be honest with you, if you are not dead familiar with these cars it really is essential to get an Porsche specialist to check the vehicle over.

Get your self registered on the Porsche club GB forum (its free) there are a few usefull buyers guides in the 944 section.

Yes i think I will have it checked.

I have rebuilt a TVR S1.5 and am no mug, but the point is taken.

My other car on the list is a MGB GT V8 and I've had five MGB's in the past. Having worked on the Ford V6 engine and MGB's the four pot engine would be better for me if minor head work was needed.

I just like the way the Porsche is put together, and its about the same price as the 1975 V8, and yes the porsche is near perfect underneath. A 1975 MG, Well enough said.

This won't be my main car, but for pleasure so I don't mind getting my hands dirty if needed.

I've rebuilt a BMW 3.5 6 series top end and hope I could do the porsche if needed. (but hope I won't have to do anything)

Back to the 944S2, It is in great condition and drives very well. No scuttle shake (unlike the TVR) and next to perfect bodywork. leather inside in wonderful order.

Any other advice would be welcome, the bloke selling I'm sure would not have a problem with having it checked.

thanks.

I used to think service hostory from years ago was important, but I'm not so sure. So what if the car missed a belt service 10 years ago?

As long as the oil was not left for 5 years from 95-2000 then you'll be fine!

Yes they do all do that (S2s crank over at very slow speed).

As long as the recent history of maintenance is good then its certainly better than loads of early history but nothing for teh past few years.

A good independant inspection will really serve you well on a car this age. It will probably bring up lots of minor faults but as long as the engine, gearbox and bodywork check out then everything else is a wear and tear consumable.

A recent clutch would be nice as they can be £1000 to replace

Thanks lads,

All advice will be done !!

Clutch seems ok to me with a smooth pull away and a nice early bite.

I'll be back if I get it !!!
