996 Turbo newbie with qustions
Discussion
Hi,
I've been lurkin on here for a bit and have a few questions. I'm looking for a 996TT and have taken out a couple of manual ones, at the moment I have a M3 with SMG and quite like the paddle shift as it's fairly involving, is the Tiptronic a good box and would you choose it over a manual? Are modded cars best avoided even if tuned by a reputable tuner? I've seen a couple of cars at Porsche dealers which are C16 imports, are these OK?
Thanks in advance

I came from a CSL with SMG and went for the tiptronic.
It's OK but definatly not like SMG, SMG is awesum.
4 weeks later I had a manual (not just to change for a manual also had loads of other problems) but after taking out the manual it's the way to go.
SMG IS a manual box with computer control. Tiptronic is an AUTO box with manual select, and you notice that.
My advice? Get the manual. BUT the Tiptronic in the TT is still an awesum package it's just that the manual is epic.

A C16 import is one which is built to full UK spec, but the delivery dealer was not in the UK - quite a few independent dealers are getting new cars quicker than the OPCs this way. For insurance purposes it is still classified as an import though.
As for the SMG vs tiptronic - I'm not a fan of either and would much prefer a manual turbo.

Hiya
When the car is built at the factory (in the main)it is given a country code, each country can have a slightly different standard spec.(in some countries full leather and air-con is an extra on certain 996's)
C16 is the country code for the UK, so official Porsche GB cars have a C16 code, as do those ordered to Uk spec direct from the factory as personal imports etc. The good news is a personal import C16 car is still saleable through the OPC network, so retains pretty much the same value as "official" OPC imports. The only thing you need to do is research the personal import cars in a little more detail, who imported them, were they registered new on arrival in the UK. The supplying continental dealers stamp should appear in the service book & it is worth contacting them directly to check that the car is definitely to the full Uk spec (as always with Porsche rules can vary!!!)and that the car was shipped via them as new to the importer!
Hope this helps.
