Hi, got a Carlimits day on Wednesday and given the weather is hit/miss will I be ok on my Dunlop SSR's?

Any suggestions for tyre pressures when doing little sprint type exercises?

Cheers

I did this day a couple of months ago and it was wet all day with standing water in a few places. I never aquaplaned once, but I have normal road Continentals.

The day is to teach how to drive fast on the track and in race conditions, so a sporty tyre would seem ideal. Having said that, the expanse of tarmac used is fairly bumpy in places.

I find them to be good in the wet provided you can keep the temperatures up. If they get cold they move around quite a bit. Now I have to say this was noticed on a motorway not a track. Travelling quite quickly it started to rain and I was a bit cautious but the grip was still there. But once the temperature dropped I had to slow down a lot to stay on the road. On a track with lots of corners you might be able to keep the temperature high enough to get the grip you need.

Sorry I can't give you the answer you need but please make sure you post your findings if you use them. I think they're a great tyre - good compromise.

SSRs are just normal road tyres right?

If so then you'll be fine but its a fairly abrasive surface so expect to lose a bit of tread - especially if you spin a lot etc.

I'd avoid taking any trackday special tyres though as you'll get a lot of wear and it doesn't really benefit practising limit handling.

Seems a shame to waste a decent set of SSR, they are road legal DanH but a fairly soft compound and come with 6mm when new.
I would use some old contis or what ever you have spare, plus SSR are getting harder to find these days.

If it's wet you won't lose much tread anyway. The name of the game is to slide the car. Did my days on DO1Js and had great fun. The tarmac isnt that abrasive IMO

Not worth worrying about IMHO . The tyres are unlikely to get warm on the high speed turn or on the small circuit , so just stay with normal recommended pressures.
I'd stay with the SSRs , most of the learning is from sliding around which is what will happen if its wet ...and if its dry its not that abrasive, less wear than a Don Palmer day.

Alan, what did you think of the Car Limits day? How does it compare with the other training days you've done?

Well Andy is certainly very talented but Don Palmer is a much better communicator.

With Don he gives you the tools to figure out the whys and how to's on your own, with Andy the reason for doing something isn't made very clear at the beginning and as for analysing the results, I spent a lot of time asking why this and why not that and I'm still non the wiser.

For me, a Don pound is worth 2 or 3 of the Andy pounds.

I've done a couple of Walshy days and a Don P day. Don P day was in between the Walshy days. I'd agree with what Alan has said, but i know that I benefitted from having done the day with Andy before spending considerably more money with Don. Andy helped alot with steering inputs and generally getting to " feel " the car, Don then takes that on to another level with understanding. I'm not saying that I'm now some driving god as that couldn't be further from the truth, but either course you'll benefit from.

Both are excellent - one thing is for sure, you will suffer from information overload and feel ridiculously tired once you've sat down after the day !

Cheers,

Ben.

Don also costs 2-3 Andy pounds

Agree though that sometimes its hard to get a good explanation out of Walshy. The more instructors you have the better though imho. I'm still raving about my cadence on road stuff.

and don't forge that Don Palmer is also a gatekeeper to the HPC - Same as cadence.

Does Don Palmer do on-road instruction like Cadence?

I'm looking for a combination of road and track/airfield instruction. Who would you recommend?

I haven't had instruction from Don, but I've done 5+ Walshy days and 1 morning with cadence. Not sure how I'd prioritise, but for day to day road driving I think the cadence just edges ahead. Walshy is more limit handling, which is also very useful, but I think I got skills I'll use more frequently from cadence.

Just do them all, and you'll work out what interests you and what you need to develop most.

Have done DP ( calm down boys that's Don Palmer on this site) and AW days and know what you mean by communications.

On the AW day I did, the 3 others asked virtually no questions but when I was unsure I quizzed Andy and got the answers I needed. With Don you don't need to ask.....
