Porsche 944 ......maybe

Hi, I posted this in general gassing, but someone pointed out this might be a better place :-)
Hmm, think I've pretty much decided on getting a 944 if I can afford to insure one. My budget is up to about 6k and it looks like potentially I could be spending half that again on the insurance (or not as the case would be!!)
Firstly, any comments on the 944? Which variants to go for/pros and cons etc? Any 'compettitors' I should check out for this sort of price range?
And secondly, anyone had any luck insuring one as a young driver? I'm planning to get the car in a few months when I turn 23 (to get an extra year on my DOB!) One potential problem is that I've got no no-claims thanks to being on someone else insurance, then my own kit car insurance.

as an introduction to porsche, and in terms of reliabilty and simplicity, the 944 2.7lux is excellent, though rarer than the 2.5. the beest of the bunch (IMHO) is the S2 and you will get an excellent example for 6K. they are thoroughly competent cars with few vices. service intervals are important, and evidence of regular and recent timing belt attention is mandatory, especially for all 16v models including the S2.
on insurance, you are stuffed. all 944s are group 20 so no getting away from it. get a copy of porsche post, try a few brokers adn some online biggies such as norwich union. consider getting a limited mileage policy to start so you can build up a NCB more cheaply

Re. insurance you could consider a classic limited mileage policy, Asset Trust will insure anything 8 years or older on this basis, and got the price down to c.400 for me in Central London however, I am not quite as, ahem, young as you.
The big downside will be that a classic policy does not accrue a NCB, nor does it benefit from having one. Though, as an aside, I have now found it certainly suffers when you have an accident. 'nuff said.

I have s2 and was 26 when I first got it, insurance SDP and commuting, kept outside, unlimited milage was about 750 with peart (admittedly 4 yrs NCB).

Renewal time my quote came down, but I now have 15k business milage as well as unlimited personal and some mods (clear lenses, stereo etc) No perf mods and protected my ncb still only 850 ish.
Love my S2 only thing about the drive to work that doesnt suck ;-)
Allow yourself 1.5k maintenance a year to run too.
Get an inspection and if it hasnt had belts/rollers done in last three years then taht needs to be done asap I would say. So use it to negotiate or get seller to do it or walk away.
Now turbo's are also popular you need to decide if you plan to go down the performance mod route in which case you have to get a turbo, the others can get some mods but not to the extent the turbo can. (remember perf mods will affect insurance)

Id punt for a classic policy on this type of car and try and run a smaller ecomomical car and get insured on that too and try and get your ncb up. This is what iam doing at the moment and use the 944 at weekends and dry weather, and then hopefully get a 911 (964) nextyear as a daily driver.

Thats pretty impressive! 25 does tned to be a 'waterhsed year' for car insurance though and quite often its the point you start being allowed a classic policy. Nonetheless, its very encouraging, particularly seems its an S and I would immagine they attract a significantly higher premium (am I right in thinking thats 220hp Vs 190 or something?) Can I ask which insurance company you're with?
