After a year of looking I've got myself a 996!!!
Of course I'd rather have had a 993 (particularly any of the widebody variants), but when the wife says you can have a Porsche so long as it's a 996, then a 996 you have...
...and I love it!
I even surprised myself by getting tiptronic (I know, I know but actually I like it and I used to be the most vociferous of the manual-only club!).
Pic is on my profile - she's got 65000 miles on her, 2 years warranty and I haven't stopped smiling since I collected her! She was supplied by Phil Woolley www.911sport.co.uk and I would really recommend that outfit (he's got a great Boxster S for less than £20K right now!).
First job - child seat in the back (Britax Trio? Any thoughts?)
Second job - driving course for me and the missus (recommendations please!)
Third job - maybe a switchable sports exhaust!
Anyway, I've been kicking around the forum for a few months now, feels good to be properly 'in the club'.

i personally wouldnt bother with the switch on the sports exhaust - it costs signif. more to fit in terms of labour, due of the fitting of the switch itself and why would you not want to hear that beautiful noise & share it with yr neighbours ???? Sell the radio, wife and kids and listen to the orchestra of the horses

Congratulations and I hope that the car brings you all the porky driving pleasure that you're looking for!
But the above line got my goat - forced to "compromise" by your wife. Do you impose similar obligations on her, e.g. "Yes you can buy the shoes dear, but only the low-heeled model"? Having obeyed her orders, you should now extract payment - a year's worth of morning blowjobs should do the trick....
Fitting just the boxes (ie not the switch) should only take a couple of hours max.
Recently (well over a year ago) I sourced a brand new sports exhaust from a breakers yard of all places for £650 & was quoted £100 to fit it without the switch - £750 all in.
I only have 2 "neighbours" who both are not close to me so not a problem, plus I keep my cars in a barn over 200metres from the house so the wife & kids don't get woken up on early starts.

Well, had the car just over a week and I'm loving it!
Have received minor grief from colleagues / friends etc for it being an 'automatic'... but most of them drive Mondeos or, worse, Audi TTs!!! ...and I think I'm becoming a 'tiptronic' convert...
Only done short trips so far (which means I'm getting 22mpg!) but planning a longer run this weekend and still seriously considering a track day at Cadwell Park to learn a bit more about the the car's limits (ie prove to myself that they really are way beyond mine!).
Don't suppose anyone has got an original 996 (3.4) sales brochure lying around they fancy letting me have...?

welcome to the "club" I know how you feel. I bought mine 2 years ago but it seems like yesterday. The Tip' is great even tracked it, loads of fun. It's so easy to live with in todays traffic and soon knows when you want to "play"
