Got out of my 996 today and noticed the carpet on the door was all wet (dripping) along the bottom edge . It rained very heavily last night so i'm thinking this must be the cause. It was just stood on the drive in the rain, not driven. First thought was there must be a dodgy seal or blocked drainage duct. I've had a look at the ones around the bottom of the door and they weren't blocked but definitely wet. Any others i should check? Is there any chance the water could be getting in from else where? I do remember some discussion about the membrane inside the panel becoming unstuck from perished sealant, anyone experienced this, would it fit these symptoms....if so was it a warantee fix? Might be a trip to the OPC i think

I'm sure you would've noticed this when returning to the car....but...your window wasn't unwound a fraction was it?...there has been mention of faulty window relays causing mystic unwinding of either passenger or drivers windows. I've had it once, dropped about 6"...but *could* be poss to drop a few mm, i.e., the same amount it drops when opening the door?

....a very good point. I can't remember it being dropped but may not have noticed if it was only a few mm's. It wasn't wet higher up on the carpeted portion of the door, so it definitely seems as though it has become wet from the bottom up not top down.
You've reminded me of when I had my Boxster. The first I knew of water getting into it was when the car started locking and unlocking itself while I was driving it. This was followed by alarm going off. Not much fun while driving through town. Turned out that some drainage holes were blocked and following heavy rain, water had got into electrics under passenger seat. No warranty at the time, so £600 bill. I suppose moral is to check regularly for leaves and stuff.

...do you know which ones were blocked. I've checked around the bottom of the door for the slots that are under the rubber seal and removed the black plugs from the larger inspection holes. Are there any others that i'm missing out?

It was pretty windy the other night. Chances are the rain was blown at one of the seals from an unusual direction. I have had this happen a couple of times over the years on various cars. Could this be a possibility?
Might be time to get the hosepipe out and get a friend to sit inside while you test the seals if it happens again.

Had this in my '98 996. In my case it was the waterproof bit inside the driver's door. It was fixed under warrantee so I can't comment of cost/difficulty to fix I'm afraid, but it didn't take them long to sort it out.

....that sounds more like it. I was coming around to this conclusion as all the drains were clear and no other bits were wet just the bottom of the door. I have the extended Porsche warantee so might not be a cost issue then. Thanks for your input.

The way to check is to run your hand along the bottom of the carpet at the bottom of the door,
if its wet, then its unlikely to be drain holes blocked
you'll need a new membrane
any bodyshop could fit it for you, takes about an hour and a half
common thing on boxster& 996 and you only notice it when winter starts
