Ive had a call from Matt @ Autowerke here in sunny Norwich, his workload has allowed my 3.2 Carrera to sneak in for its top end rebuild.

So, my question is:

What potential benefits am I likely to realise from the work being done?

(I understand that it will stop the oil seapage into the cylinders so she wont smoke on start-up any more)

but can I expect any noticeable difference whilst driving the car?

Cheers
Dom

Any top end rebuild will improve the feel of the car. she will feel sharper and run sweeter. It will Be more economical, use less oil, and start better. It should feel back to its best provided the rest of the engine is good.

throttle response will be the best part, with a far better pick up.
If you don't mind me asking, how much will it be?

Ive been given a ball park figure of £2.5k +vat...

Im hoping I might be able to offer cash for a bit of discount but if not - thats what you have to pay for quality reliable expert service I guess.

Im assuming thats not outrageous?

I'm sure someone who knows your marque will know if thats a good price.
I notice you had no replies, and feel this may be down to this section all dumped into one.

You will see that I have posted concerning this site. I feel it would benefit from splitting it like the TVR section. you would have replies in mins on the TVR site as you would post for your car type.

Has this been tried do you know.
And by the way, good luck with the car.

Of interest what work is being undertaken in the rebuild? Now would be a good opportunity to make some improvements if possible.

my 964 had a top end two years back for £3,400 so £2.5k seems fairly reasonable...

Depends on how down on power the old girl is, if shes suffering badly- 30bhp down is not unusual in air cooled 911s needing a top end build- then yeh you will notice a big diference when shes done, otherwise mainly just the stopping of oil consumption issues.

The thought crossed my mind but Im loathed to move away from standard as she's been completely unmolested thus far.

Although,

Matt (Autowerke) has said that the exhaust is at risk when removing as they need some 'persuading' apparently! So, if it does then I think maybe a S/S item would be nice

So Boosted, what would your suggestions for engine mods be??? JUST OUT OF INTEREST OBVIOUSLY

my rebuild for the 964 was quoted at £3.5k, came in at £7k. Had to ditch my mod plan!

I have my fingers well and truly crossed that nothing nasty is found during the process, but I guess the reality is that the bill is open to change dependent on findings... Im mildly nervous now!!!

I suspect you'll find your risk with a 3.2 is considerably less than if you had a 964 so I wouldn't be too worried.

A friend of mine had a top end rebuild of his 3.2 Carrera around 6 years ago and it cost him around 2.5K then so what you have been quoted seems very reasonable.

My friend and I did my 964 some years ago; we had a local engineering shop re-cond the heads and fit new guids (not porsche ones) and all 6 came to £300. New rings were another £200, clutch £350, gaskets £200 or so. Cheap job but took ages.
Hopefully won't be doing the 993 for a while!

The best bit about the top end rebuild, is that you can accurately adjust the valve clearances. One of the long term, high milage issues, is that the knuckle joints on the rockers get worn and sloppy. It makes accurate adjustment of the clearances pretty tough to achieve.

The othe benefit is that you can easily replace the oil return tubes in the process. They always end up leaky in the end, and replacement means a nice dry garage floor (if you didnt already have one).

The other thing that is a long term problem is the cylinder head studs, have a tendancy to snap. It's not usually too much of a problem if one or two are gone, but it's good not to have it as a problem in waiting.
