Cayman S - yes, no, oooh ?

Morning all!
Lets cut a long story short - I've had my first taste of Porsche and now want more!
In my "toy" collection I have an S2000 and a Classic 911. To see the S2000 at the top of the TopGear survey pile is no surprise, I love it to bits and was one of those that put it there. However the 911 is utterly superb - not nearly as good, fast or comfortable as the S2000 but is in some undescribable way, special.
I'm getting rid of both toys and getting something else (driver is the S2000 is nearly 3 years old and 2 cars is too many), the Cayman looks like a very reasonable possibility. I do love my rag tops, but there again have Boxster "snobbery" so its difficult to get me in one. Sorry. The 911 is, of course, wonderful, but too much cash. I don't want a 996 (great, but they don't really do it for me), but a 993 - a really well sorted, looked after one. Hmm, thing is they're all getting on a bit and as much as Tower Porsche are absoultely fantastic I have got used to Honda reliability.
So Porsche have made this thing that seems to be realistically priced, has the engine in the right place (mind you I do love my 911 and the engine is in the right place for that!) and has the benefit of their extensive engineering experience.
Every reviewer seems to love it and I can find anyone to slag it off. The nearest insult I've found is "its just a Boxster with a roof", however looking into that its clear that its not. Another one is "another 944" - ie. better than the 911, but people still didn't want it. Hmm - dunno about that one.
I suppose I've made up my mind, but the hestitating points for me are the depreciation (I'm assuming comparable with the Boxster), the tin top (I've got used to my rag top for 3 years and like it), and spending sh*t loads of cash (it is for me - I work in Woolies stacking shelves) on a new car.
It would appear to be a really great car that I'll thoroughly enjoy and love to bits.
My local dealer has built slots available for June delivery, which works (financially) for me, but if I miss those it will be more difficult to get one for around then. There are always cancelled orders, but I prefer my own spec for that money. Basically its nearing decision time.
So, although it appears I've made up my mind... always interested to hear opinions of others.

I believe if you cut my arm, leg, or torso you will see 993 runs through me like a stick of rock, but i also believe the Cayman S will be a great car.
If they make a Cayman CS it'll be a giant killer, but that could be a reason not to make it - it may threaten the bottom rungs of the 911 ladder.

Thats good - interesting to note that a 993 fan believes this will be a good option.
I do have a minor worry that they may bring out an RS or CS later that'll seriously devalue the S, but there again I don't see how, from a marketing perspective, they can allow it to challenge the 911.
I don't think the Cayman will ever seriously threaten the 911. It might get close in performance terms, or even better it, but then outright performance isn't the whole deal.
I read this at the weekend: "Your head will say Cayman, you heart will say 911". I think that's about right. I could afford to buy a new Cayman, but instead I'm buying a 6-year old 996. No contest as far as I'm concerned.

That's a very good point - i spotted a very attractive black 996 GT3 (rhd) in the PH classifieds this morning for low 40's.

Surely a specced cayman is more like 50k anyway? I've seen mk2s for near that!
30k in 3 years sounds reasonable, in the absence of a crystal ball.
Seriously Ben, take a look at a 996GT3. It won't depreciate as much, and good though the Cayman will be, I doubt it will have the pace and excitement of a GT3 (just me fusing the experience of 997S with Boxster S and comparing it with GT3 Mk2 in my befuzzled brain.)
Whatever you get, look forward to seeing it at the 'ring in 06.

Maybe. Whilst the car is still "new" (as a model). I think it may be less than that, sadly.
I test drove the 987 Boxster S and it is a truly superb car. On that basis the Cayman S should also be really excellent.

People tend to ignore options when working out depreciation costs, so they'll be thinking of it as a 40k car not a 50k car. You'll be lucky to only lose '10k' on a car in 3 years!
Mmmm... very valid point. I should add that to my calculations.
And to the other posts, that GT3 is gorgeous and if they were both in the showroom at the same price I would veer towards that, BUT... err... ummm... I'm in a dilemma again!
I *think* I want a new car - "just because". The fact its a new model is more attractive still. I like the reassurance of being new and the dealer's problem should anything happen to it. I know you can get warranties but with everything new you know where you are.
I think I should just go for it and be aware of how much it will cost (depreciation, insurance, etc..) in those 3 years.

blimey!!! Tell you what, get that GT3, pay me £20k and I'll look after any problems that arise... (I'll get a porker warrantee, know nothing big will go wrong and pocket £19k to buy t'Cerbera off dad)

Ordinarily with a new model i'd be concerned about "bugs" that inevitably arise with any new car (not just your new vehicle but an entire new model range), but i think in this case it's really just a significant evolution of the 987 boxsterm, which itself is an evolution of the 986 boxster, which i swear grow on trees by the number i see every day.

Doesn't quite work like that.
Let me re-phrase, I would like to buy a brand new car and not a second hand one. For £50k I want and expect a hassle free owner ship experience.

Also, the first cars are popping out around December. By the time my build comes up, they'll have been making them for 6 months.
