I HAD A PORSCHE 964 TURBO BODIED CONVERTIBLE ABOUT 8 YRS AGO, I LOVED THE CAR BUT HAD NOTHING BUT BAD LUCK WITH IT, IT HAD ONLY DONE 16,000 MILES WHEN I BOUGHT IT PRIVATE WITH NO WARRANTY , BUT FROM WEEK 8 I HAD NOTHING BUT BOTHER I HAD TO FIT A NEW CLUTCH AND FLYWHEEL, NEARLY £1500 THEN JUST AFTER THAT A SERVICE BILL OF ANOTHER £1500 AND THEN A HEATER MOTOR £800, THEN THE CAR WAS GOING FLAT IF I LEFT IT ANY LONGER THAN TWO DAYS, HENCE A YEAR LATER I SOLD IT MY POCKETS COULD'NT TAKE MUCH MORE.
8 YEARS ON A FEW CARS LATER I STILL HAVE A PASSION FOR THE 911, I'VE BEEN FANCYING A 996 CARRERA 4S TIPTRONIC WITH LOW MILEAGE BETWEEN 1 AND 3 YEARS OLD.
I FANCY THE TIPTRONIC THIS TIME BECAUSE THE WHOLE CLUTCH EXSPERENCE FROM BEFORE PUTS ME OFF MANUAL, CAN YOU TELL ME IF I SHOULD EXPECT THE SAME TYPE OF BILLS AS BEFORE, THINGS THAT I SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR WHEN BUYING AND MORE IMPORTANTLY HOW RELIABLE IS THE 996 C4S
AND IS A TIPTRONIC A GOOD BUY.
WITH THANKS AND HOPE OF FINDING A GOOD CAR WITHOUT THE WORRIES

No car can be guaranteed reliable. It depends on who's owned it, how it has been maintained and even whether it was made on a Friday by some bloke about to go on his Bavarian hunting holiday.
The 996C4S has age (youth) on its side. It won't be too old, so not much wear and tear at a guess and many of the 996 teething problems were sorted by this model. However, the 996 engines are not the most bullet-proof ever made, but no worse than modern BMW engines etc. Make sure you get a warranty if you want to make sure you won't get hit by a major bill.
As for previous ownership experiences, the 964 Turbo is a comparatively costly model to run. However, I think the prices charged were a bit high; an independent should be doing the work at half that rate. You must have gone to an OPC?
Remember, you are buying a Porsche not a TVR or Lotus. They are fundamentally well tested, engineered and manufactured. Probably as well as BMW, Audi and Mercedes. No car can be guaranteed reliable, but if you want a 996, get one. I'm sure it'll be fine and you'll love it.
PS Please don't use CAPS!!!!!! It is the equivalent of shouting and makes your posts difficult to read.
