993 - a baby dilemma...please help

Hope you can help. I have been planning to buy a 993 for the last few months and done the usual trawling around - portiacraft, 911 virgin and a few private cars. I've had a few people say that i wouldnt get away with running it as an every day car, 30 miles and a bit of M4 action.
Anyway..it now seems that there's going to be an addition to the family. So i decided to go for a 530d or something sensible. A friend has just phoned and offered a 993 C2 70k 1994, he's owned it from 10k. Its got the full PSH and in great condition? Is 21k a good price and should i be concerned about it because its an early 993?
Am I mad having a few months of fun and then selling up? Should I start burning money now?

I have a 993 (and love it) and two small children (and love them).
However, I also have a sensible car.
If this is your only car I would honestly advise against it.
1. You cannot get a stage 1 baby seat (ie rear facing) into the back of a 993; so until about 9 months old (or more) the front seat is the only option, however:
2. you cannot (easily) turn off the airbag in the front passenger seat of an early 993, later ones have this option, so the front seat is no good either, and
3. in any case your wife/partner WILL NOT want to get onto the back soon after havbing a baby
4. it does not have enough luggage space, unless you are a genius in packing for babies when they go travelling
If you have another car though ... different matter

You've got 6 months before the new addition arrives?
Well based on what you've said 21K sounds a v good price (is it RHD?), so you probably won't lose much on it. And you would get to own a 993 for 6 months ...
I'sd still have it inspected even if the seller is a friend. He can always use the inspection report for other prospective purchasers if you decide not to buy.
Your other half might get a bit fed up towards the 9 month point ... not too easy to get in/out of ...
I'd hang on to get some more informed opinion, on this though. My track record in buying/selling cars at a good price isn't exactly stellar. Sure someone handy will be along shortly.

Running the car every day would be the least of the problems. The car would be absolutely fine its the occupants I'm worried about ...

You could run it in the manner you are suggesting but it realy is not the most comfortable or practicle car for a pregnant mum or a sprog. My stong recommendation would be to buy your friends car and also get your self a cheap saloon to carry the family around in. This way you could enjoy the 993 for your commute.
We have managed it this way. I keep the 993 for myself, weekend fun, sometimes with the kids. We also have a E39 BMW for serious family transport and long hauls. You can pick up something like the E39 for next to nothing nowadays.
Just my opinion.

I have to contribute to this thread (come on, it's got 993 in the title!), but all i want to say is this:
A 993 is a useable every day car, and the one you have your eye on sounds pretty good, but don't kid yourself that your pregnant wife will want to spend much time in it. That will come in a year or two.
I just bought a remarkable winter car for £1k though (so my 993tt doesn't kill me when it snows). Air con, leather, lots of space, reliable, comfortable, fantastic family car. Food for thought?

I have a '96 993 Carrera 2 - i'd just put the deposit down on it, when my wife told me the news that she was well and truly 'knocked up'
...Fast forward 8 months and she has NO TROUBLE getting in and out. Just bought a Quinny Zapp pushchair that fits in the front...
It's also my daily driver - 30 miles round trip to my workplace (B roads though
)
However we do also have another small car (VW Polo) for her and the bambino...

...Fast forward 8 months and she has NO TROUBLE getting in and out. Just bought a Quinny Zapp pushchair that fits in the front...

Defo agree that its a viable daily driver.
However, you have another car and that makes a big difference. My recommendation is still if its an only car don't do it.
One small side point the Quinny Zapp is not really suitable for a baby that can't sit up, ie less than about 6 moonths old - it doesn't recline at all (I have one). If you are using it in its "carriage" mode for the appropriate stage 1 seat (Maxi Cosi csomething or other I think) then it'll be OK, but I think you'll struggle to get that seat in a 993. I certainly did (as we had one of those as well).

Ah..Cheers for the advice. We bought the extra Maxi Cosi seat gizmo too - haven't tried fitting it in the 993.TBH I haven't even opened the box yet
I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.... My point (as echoed by others) was to get a 'reasonably priced' 5 door car as a baby/wife transporter....

Alternatively the Porker seat goes straight in with the existing belt and is OK for a 2 year old. Its rear facing stage 1 seats that really have the problem.

The Porsche supplied longer belt for the back is pretty poor and only really suitable for the Porsche Prince seat.
I'd thoroughly recommend Quick Fit. They provide the best advice and solutions for baby seats into a 911. I had a special long rear belt and front facing car seat fitted for my 9 month old daughter by them. The seat has a proper 4 point harness (unlike Porsche Prince) and is very securely fitted with the special belt they provide.
Safety is so important, and these guys are professionals. Highly recommended.

Quickfit SBS fitted a longer seatbelt in the back of my 968 for a tickle under £100. I use a Recaro Start seat in the back for my 4 year old, and a Recaro Start with Impact Cusion for the 2 year old (the impact cushion necessitated the seat belt extension). I like the Recaro Start seat as it has an aluminium sub-frame which is good at crash energy absorbtion (apparently).
Also have a Skoda Octavia vRS for the missus and long-distance holiday stuff. Good little motor - reliable, decently quick for a family car and importantly a huge boot capacity - over 500 litres. Never underestimate just how much stuff you need to pack when travelling with small children. Nappies alone require more boot space than you have on a 993
