If its the plate type then, you may be able to turn by hand but there should be some pre-load (resistance), generally as the diff wears you loose the pre-load and you get more slip on tight cornering.
I think the quaife one will also turn by hand and on low grip you will get some slip.
Best way to check you have a LSD is to jack both wheels up, put in gear and turn one wheel, if the other turns easily in the opposite direction, 9 times out of 10 is a standard open diff.
