Hi,

We're putting together a guide to the 996 GT3RS and would like to include the view of a couple of owners. If you would like to help us out please contact me on the email below and I'll let you know the specifics we are after.

Many thanks for your help.

I'm guessing he's already had responses as I cross posted to titanic. I CBA to respond though as their coverage of the RS has always annoyed me.

One thing you find with the Gt3 RS is that quite a few owners have very little experience of other sporting Porsche, so the superlatives used often don't have quite the same value.

Not trying to be over contentious with the above,,,obviously some owners have vast experience of many types and the GT3RS is undoubtedly one of the great Porsches etc....

They just want owners experiences, not some kind of objective appraisal built on years of experience. Surely thats the job of the journos? Can't say I agree with much the GTPP journos say about the RS though!

Quite the sloppiness is appalling, have any of them ever heard of a thing called a book ?

I didn't think I'd jump to the defence of GTPP, but I think their magazine has improved, especially since total911 arrived on the shelves. They seem to be becoming a 911 magazine though, as their coverage has become more and more 911 focussed. I can't recall the last time a non-911 was on the cover, and I think this must be one only a few posts by them on PH.

Re: sloppiness, I think part of the problem used to lie in the fact that none of the main contributors were Porsche buffs. I think the mag started at Unity, which published a range of magazines, from BMW titles to double glazing monthly. I think that's changed a bit now with Chris Harris getting involved.

Hmm well I have a sub to their mag, and recent covers have been a CGT and the Cayman IIRC.

I don't think their contributors really 'get' the RS though. Or maybe its just a crap car and all the happy owners are mistaken

Dan, this is what I was referring to earlier anout the succesion of 911 models, The Gt3RS is a great car...to me it is more a GT car than an RS....perhaps Porsche put the letters in that order on purpose.

Having read recent GtPP comparison articles.....I think they do get it!

If you get the chance try some earlier more raw RS models.....

Not taking anything away from the GT3RS, it has the best normally aspirated engine I have found in any Porsche..(I have not had the pleasure of a CGT)

Its the inconsistency that bugs me. The car is either too hard for the road, or too soft for the track. They also don't like it as much as the standard GT3 which I find odd. Must admit I've never heard it being accused of being a GT before In fact Mark Hales complained it was so stiff as to be dangerous on the road in Circuit Driver mag.

I'd love an opportunity to drive the other RSs Isn't it traditional for journos to generally dislike RS models for at least 10 years? Although Evo loved the RS from the start.

The only issue I have with the RS is that its not as light as it could be. I'm not sure what they could do though, and still maintain modern safety standards.

"accused of being a GT" is that a bad thing?? I think I could put up with a Carrera GT.

You mention the modern day legislation adding weight and features compromising the car this along with the longer wheelbase makes the 996 more of a GT than a sportscar to me.
I didn't think that was too revolutionary a thought in the real world.

Again, please don't get the impression I am knocking the car, I had an order in for one at one point and may well own one in the future when prices stabilise.

Dan, I really couldn't care what a magazine thinks of a car,,,going to trackdays these cars are amongst the fastest on longer tracks and appear capable of close to 200mph across Europe.
Something you can't do in any other 911 RS.
If that is what you need in a distinctive car then surely the boxes are ticked?

GT is a grand tourer I thought? To me thats a 996 turbo - a car designed for eating up continents in comfort. As you say the GT3 RS is one of the fastest cars on trackdays and the RSR does more than adequately in GT racing despite its wheelbase If you want to turn an RS into a near race car, a set of dampers is all it takes.

I don't base my purchasing decision on what the mags say either, I just get annoyed with the inconsistency as GTPP seems to damn it from both perspectives!

Getting back to the older cars which I really do like, I thought the 993 RS was softer, and the 964 RS harder?

Dan, a 996 Gt3RS is a great car and I am pleased that you are so happy with your purchase.

To add value to your discussion, please go and try earlier 911 RS versions to decide on hard/soft yurself...the earlier cars are more chuckable out of the Box, then you may or may not seen what I mean about the GT thing in comparison, I did mention longer circuits, because over something like Brands Indy they do not have enough space to truly get in their stride realising their full potential.

Thre are quite a few guys I know who have owned both cars,,,,some still have both and will no doubt be able to add to this discussion should they choose on the differences.
And that is the point differences, I am certainly not trying to say anyone car is overall better than another.

So a stock 964 or 993 RS would be quicker around brands indy?

I'm neither a good enough driver, nor obsessed enough to get overly wrapped up in this type of discussion, still be interested to know if they could outperform in skilled hands though.

p.s. Could do without the patronising 'add value' comments thanks

They are all good cars. The 996RS is slightly softer to help deploy its BHP advantage. Its got 120 BHP on a 964 which is more of a go cart. You can't have it all ways. 400BHP in a 964 on its standard springs would be a bloody nightmare. They are just different, that's all. Both built as state of the art Gt cars of their day and both far ahead of the competition.

Ignore the Journos, they talk bollox.

I can't say I have much experience of hardcore 911s as I don't - Having a + 530bhp 996TT doesn't count I suppose.
The car I owned before my GT3RS was the normal Mk2 GT3. After driving Ferraris/Lamborghinis etc literally day-in day-out at work (and owning the odd one) when I bought my old mk2 I thought it was soo good that I had to buy an RS just to find out how Porsche could improve it...
... And it's a HUGE improvement. I love this car.
I would love to drive a 993RS and compare but I suspect that as much as the old RS's are awesome, there is a lot of sentimentality (last air cooled, old school, lighter etc) which is what keeps people so attached to the car.
I do *think* however that I am better qualified to compare the GT3RS to it's current competition - on that basis, in my very humble and pointless opinion, the GT3RS is probably THE most focussed drivers car out there (barring the motorbike-engined shoeboxes caterhams etc). To say that it may even approximate to a "GT" is IMO totally wrong. Camparable offerings from Lamborghini the Ferrari 430 etc, despite their huge performance, lovely as they are, cruisers compared to this car. Even the 360 CS lacks the edge with it's driver aids.

What I find strange is as Dan pointed out:
Magazine X: Too compromised for Road (ERRR... no it's not)
Magazine Y: Not light/stiff/mad enough for track (ERR....it's meant to be a road car - otherwise I would have bought a Cup car d'oh).

I tend to agree with Steve R on the whole - it is the owners opinions that count.

I also find it very hard to fault this car.. I think only somebody of Steve Rance's driver skill, could express a valid opinion of the marginal adjustments, that could be made to enhance the car.

This is certainly the best track orientated car, I've owned by far..

I've done about twenty trackdays this year, the other cars I've owned and tracked this year were a highly modified Evo, Mk2 GT3, M3 CSL and TVR Sagaris..

Since I've owned the RS, I've done Snetterton, Silverstone GP twice, Spa and the Ring, and I'm still reluctant to play with the standard settings.!

IMO

Anyone know if Autocar or Auto Moto & Sport have tested the 993 (edit: not 993, 996 of course ;-) ) GT3 RS, and if so, which edition has it?

Thanks a million!

Ciao
