Thoughts on 997 C2S after 500 miles

Having just completed my first 500 miles of everyday driving in the 997 a few minor things occur to me:
- The "sports" botton is in probably the worst place it could be. You cant see it behind the gearstick (manual) and its quite tricky to get to. But when selected the car just comes alive.
- The sports seats are great and the heated seats option is so good in this cold weather. Not an option I would have chosen myself but loving it.
- Being tall, the up and down movement on the steering column is a real bonus.
- Have the standard sound system which on the S is an enhanced system with I think 10 speakers. If I had spec'd the car I would have chosen the Bose which also comes with the sub and separate amp to drive it. However, I have to say the sound is still pretty good and a hell of an improvement over the standard 996 system.
- My son loves the drinks holders (shouldn't have shown him those)and is fascinated by the sports chrono timer.
- The rear wiper which is an extra is very much worth having, especially in this weather.
- Havent found the switch to control the headlight level yet, dont even know if there is one likeon th e996. Time to get the manual out.
- Sat Nav is superb (JC was right!) but doesnt take postcodes.
- Only noises are a small squeek from the dashboard just behind the steering wheel and an intermitant rattle from the passenger seat when empty (will get this looked at), coming from the seat lift release knob mechanism.
- Like the switchable autodimming rearview mirror, not seen one of those before.
- I prefered the 996 sports steering wheel to the feel of the 997 but getting used to it.
- Fuel con is pretty good, averaged 27/28 mpg on a recent trip up to Norwich from Surrey.
- Loving the sound of the exhausts, just standard but sound great.
- As for the driving experience that is just superb, the shell is so much stiffer than the 996 cab and the extra power is really noticable. Wherever I go people seem to know exactly what the car is, having seen the Top Gear programme with the Aston and BMW M6. It sounds daft but I get let across the traffic by the first car without exception turning into work every morning. Quite noticable over previous experience with the 996 cab. Guess folk just want to take a look! JC seemed to think the Aston would have that effect and in a porker people wouldnt let you out but he got that wrong!

Welcome to the happy 997 owner's club. Following on from your comments:
Agree with the sports seats being great. I'm not all that svelte and they felt a bit tight at first. Thankfully, my soft bones are slowly adapting themselves to fit.
Shouldn't the rear wiper have a wash facility? Also it's a bit annoying when you select reverse and the rear wiper drags itself across the screen leaving a smeary mess.
Don't you wish you could turn on the SatNav without turning on the stereo?
Is your exhaust raspier before you've warmed up properly? I know I shouldn't, but it's far too tempting to blip the throttle to about 4000RPM, even though the engine temp is on zero.
Don't you just love the fact that you have to think really hard of things that annoy you?

Sean, I've noticed the "people letting you in" thing too! But I've also had my share of arseholes tailgating and cutting in, more so than with my previous car (M3). The PSE is without doubt the best mod, if you haven't got it, please get it! Bose seems okay but I haven't heard the standard system so I can't compare. I do drop the rear seats though to open the bass bins. Mines on 2500 miles now and it just gets quicker. I've read that the engine continues to loosen up until 5000.

I have to say I havent noticed that problem in reverse, my rear wiper has only worked when I switch the stick forward but then I leave it off the rest of the time and no prob.
I've always got the stereo on! I think it is a bad habit to rev when cold so havent tried, I notice the exhaust rattles a bit when first cold. I'm not that slim these days either and those sports seats deefinitely seem to settle down around your backside, Luv em!

Congrats on the car Sean, awesome machine, be careful over the next few weeks, even with all the electronics that car has the rear wheels still like a fair bit of movement in the wet greasy conditions. I had my 2s last nov/dec and had butterflies a good few times!
I know exactly what you mean. My 996 hardly ever twitched on me but the 997 will let you know if you come on the power a touch too early, I guess its all that torque plus the wider wheels and the extra low profile will help them breakaway suddenly. Have been driving like a pussy for the last 10 days!
Another note here referred to the PSE option, I guess I should know what that is but my brain can't recall? Can you enlighten?

You have a very good point !
As for taking it easy in the wet? what are you a man or a mouse?
Get on a wet trackday and you will be astonished by how balanced the car is and how far it can slide without spinning and that is with PSM off. Turn it on and the car is a pussycat.
PSE is the sports exhaust. It's the only option I really regret not ordering when I spec'd the car. And retro-fitting costs a lot more than it would have done up front, so I'm not going to bother.
Regarding the rear wiper (hope jjr1 isn't reading this) it switches itself on when you engage reverse if you've used the front wipers within the last x seconds. A common feature on modern cars and there's probably a way of disabling it, but I keep forgetting to look in the manual.
And note to self. Stop blipping the throttle when cold.

Will dip my foot back into fast car teritory once I sell my damn 340r (bad bad idea to buy, will be mine till spring now!) getting cooper s 'works gp' special edition in september to replace it, and hopefully back into 997 territory once the coffers build up again!

And there's me thinking I've done all my spending this year. Going to have to look into this Tubi thing. Apart from sounding great does it have any effect on power output?
My brother told me about a mate of his who works for a company specialising in "chipping" cars and they have developed a chip for the 997 but haven't sold any yet, apparently they'll do me a discount deal as their keen to get one into a 997. I'm going to look into this a bit more and see that the upgrade offers!

If you guys are too far away from each other, another thought is that the Tubi guys are based in Egham, not very far from Guildford at all.
When I was speaking to them about an exhaust for my 996TT I really wanted to hear the sound of it on a car, and they said that they could link me up with someone who had a Tubi fitted to their TT locally.
Sure they could put you in touch with a 997C2S with Tubi owner who is local to you, if you were interested.

Hey jjr1 thanks for the offer but I think Rumplestilskin's idea is a good one, I will try and pop up to Egham and see Scuderia Systems, my neighbours will love it!!!
