Ever since my dads mate bought a new one in the early 90's I've been obsessed with car.....
Am I right in believing there were two versions:
- extremely rare '92 3.3 Turbo S
- RIDICULOUSLY rare '93 3.6 Turbo S (or is this just a fantasy).
How much do these cars cost now (in RHD OR LHD) and where can you find one? Anyone got one? What are they like to drive?

I think clubsport knows a bit about these cars. Extrememly Rare and I know Nick Faldo had one when they came out. Seem to remember them costing near enough double the price of the standard turbo of the time.

There are 8 RHD 965 turbo S of the 3.3 variety. They produced 381 Bhp as opposed to 320 in the non S version. The kerb weight was I believe 1290 KG rather than 1460. This was achieved by chucking out all the ponsy leather 12 way heated electric seats and air con
and replacing it with some cardboard painted black and a board to sit on. I believe the price was 90k as opposed to 73k for the normal turbo. There were 2 turbo S flatnoses of the 3.6 variety which I believe are the rarist of any porsche and the cost was 130k. No idea if an ordinary 3.6S was sold but I have never heard of any.

Not quite, I know of a One of, last one delivered, to a guy Stateside. styled by Herm himself. and it cost a shed load more than £130k.
But it's a tip, albeit a very special one....
Details are of course to be found on the stateside porsche forum...you guess where.

EIGHT rhds! well......that's that then.
If I understand your post correctly there are no NON-slantnose 3.6 Turbo S cars. (from what I've managed to gather from the internet this ridiculosuly rare 3.6 Turbo S was more luxo-spec car than the 3.3 Turbo S which was an out 'n' out nutter spec car).
3.3 Turbo S looks like the one to have. And bright yellow too.
From a pure curiosity point of view has anyone got links to any for sale (LHD of course) and where they are being priced today.

Manu, if you want pictures of a yellow lhd car...look at www.gtclassics.co.uk go to the bottom of the page and click the cars previously sold link,,,,when the page opens your Turbo s is half way down......
Thanks for the link. What an AWESOME looking car.....
I've heard lots about this X88 option. Was it available for both the 3.3 965 AND the 3.6 965 - was the Turbo S engine the same as 3.3 + X88?
And if it WAS avaialble for the 3.6 965 what was the power output? Sorry for anorak questions.

One of the Porsche mags had an article on a slantnose turbo S a couple of months or so back. Seem to remember a sky-high price being mentioned in the copy? Sorry can't remember which one but it would have been either GT Purely Porsche, Total 911 or 911 & Porsche World. I'm near certain there was a discussion in the article about the differences between it and the normal turbos etc.

Flamespitter on this board has one (in yellow), as well as a few other nice bits and pieces! He had it at Donington recently. They are a bit like a cross between a normal Turbo and an RS.
I don't think flamespitters is original form the factory. I think ( though I could be wrong) he had the car done with all factory parts. I think Tech9 did some of the work - but I expect flamespitter himself is the authoriy on this one.
I drove it at the 'ring - wipers on full in some section as the rain came down. Its a very quick car!

Manu, i am no expert on these beast so I am sure someone more knowledgable will be along to correct the finer details.
My understanding is.....
Turbo2 3.3 = 320bhp
Turbo s 3.3 = 381 bhp
Turbo2 3.6 = 360 bhp
Turbo2 3.6 with X88 = 385 bhp
Turbo S 3.6 = 385 bhp (same engine as above).
I am not aware that an X88 pack was available on the 3.3 turbo.....I doubt it would have offered the extra 61bhp of the S if it was.
Have to agree the 3.3 Turbo S is the one to go for,,,, more like a Gt2 than what the Turbo S was to become in later versions.
Go and rent bad boys 1 on DVD and try to spot the scenes where they are using a real S and the scenes where it is the directors Turbo 3.3....is that anorak enough for you mate
Oh! I found this link on my favourites...

The 3.3 Turbo had the X55 which took the normal 964 3.3 turbo to about 355bhp. The 3.6 had the X88 which delivered around 380bhp. The 3.3 Turbo S has a development of the X55 in, as much as, the 3.3 is a completely different engine to the 3.6. But its basically bigger turbo, cams, heads and a slightly more agressive ignition.
If recall the 3.3 Tubro S was nearer 120k new...

Thank you so much for all your informative posts. I would have been searching the internet for hours to get all that info.
Clubsport that's especially useful - thanks mate - not sad at all believe me!
Going off on a tangent slighly, even as an owner of a GT3RS, you have to wonder about Porsche's "badge dilution." No doubt there are plenty of 964/993 RS owners out there that think that the GT3 RS doesn't deserve the fabled RS badge added to the GT3 designation... that's open to debate
I do think it's pretty much clear when you compare the 996 Turbo S (and even the 993 turbo S) to this 965 version that there is clear badge dilution going on - more marketing exercises than new special models. In fact the current GT2 ought to have the Turbo S badge - it's awesome but it's not the homologation special racecar the 993 GT was. The 996 GT2 designation should have been reserved for something even crazier.
Porsche had big balls pricing a car for £120K back in 1992/3 when it was a whole pile more money than it is today...shame really I suppose they don't build 'em like they used to.....

I can answer your questions boys.
There were indeed 8 of the babies made and they did indeed put out 381horses.
There was one (I think) factory rhd yellow one made and it was last for sale with Paragon about 18 months ago @ £60k. Prior to that it is my understanding that it had come from a private Irish collection.
I drove it.
I really really really really should've bought it.
Still the scariest car I have been in and that now includes a Sagaris and Tuscan2 S down the same roads. When that turbo hits and you have your foot planted, the revs ram so high so fast you are snatching gears out of sheer panic. The acceleration is monstrous above 3k rpm and it is terrified violence, all you can see is the needle hurtling to the red line and all you can think about is "
, dont blow the engine, dont blow the engine!" Er, backing off the loud pedal doesnt actually enter your head till you have hit 5th and finally stopped the revs flying skywards, dare to breathe again and look at the speedo. By which time 120 is on the clock and then your brain remembers again that you are on a single width A road in East Sussex.
Oh and it makes a noise that basically says "Im going to rape Wayne Rooney!"

I cannot find any reference to a x55 upgrade. The turbo s most definately had a 3.3 turbo with 381 hp not 355. Nowhere in any of the literature is 355hp mentioned. Is this an American specification?
I owned the black 3.6 Turbo S flatnose for many years. Great looking car, but for me it always felt like a simple cosmetic job. Laggy, too stiff, too heavy.
I've not driven a 3.3 Turbo S, but I'm guessing this would be a better car.
Value wise, I think I bought the 3.6S for around £75k in 1996, sold it four it five years later for £60k. Rare car, and will hold its value, but not one of the greats.....
