paintshop choice - price & quality?

odd one this - trawled round local bodyshops the other week getting quotes for the front and of my 16 yr old 964 booked in for a front end respray.
ended up booking into a local volkswagen/audi approved bodyshop for £600 - the guy came out had a quick look at the car and offered me the price - didn't really have a detailed look at the car, but totted up about £100 materials and 20 hrs labour
subsequently went to a place that specializes in Noble & TVR and chatted to the guy for a good hour or so about all sorts of car and paint related stuff:
how many shades of India (guards) red that there are,
how best to touch in stonechips etc. etc. -
Had a look at a couple of Nobles that were half done in his spray booth - I really got a good feel for the place, and they come highly recommended..
Trouble is his quote was for about £1000
now my quandry - should I go for the £600 job and keep my fingers crossed, or go for an extra 400 quid for what seems like a place run by real enthusiasts?
having typed this i think i've answered my own question.... but if anyone has any thoughts I'd be most grateful

Just out of interest when you say front end what do you mean.
Bonnet and bumper or wings and that bit in front of windscreen as well.
just curious.
out of those 2 options id go for the latter. sound like teh guys would take more care and you would be happier with the results.

A good paint job is as much an issue of dilligence and enthusiasm as it is experience. But you know that.
Perhaps worth considering a few more quotes and getting prices? You'll be spending a long time looking at the end result; so it's worth putting time into sourcing one of the known "good guys". I'm sure plenty people here can recommend a paintshop? I'd personally go with people who have experience of respraying *your* type of car rather than pay for them to work out how to take it to pieces and reassemble it...Not that I've had cause to use one yet, but I repeatedly see Specialized Paint in Reading being recommended again and again for Porsche work.

You get what you pay for. Usually.
To do this job properly you have to strip the panels fully, so in the case of the 964 which is prone to corrosion around the screen apperture this also includes removing the windscreen. The job is therefore summarised as:
Remove:
windscreen (risk of breakage)
bonnet
headlamps
side repeaters & wing seals
bonnet seal
archliners & underspoiler
PU (bumper)
indicators & spot lights
6 hrs
Prepare
To paint the panels properly without risk of underlying paint causing issues will need the panels stripping to the original primer. If the PU has been painted several times before this can only be done by hand.
8-12 hrs
Paint
Prime, flat, reprime, flat, paint, laquer 4 panels
8 hrs
Rebuild
Refit all parts removed, align bonnet, refit windscreen
6-8hrs
Polish
Wet flat and polish external panels. Clean car.
3 hrs
Total approx 30-40 hrs = £1500, Paint and materials = £160, all +VAT
Parts = wing seals, screen seal, screen if reqd.

Colin, I must say your price sounds about right, I have a similar repaint on my 964 inc, Bonnet, Bumper, Wings, headlight surrounds, Scuttle Plate, Winscreen out, etc and it came to £2200. However this also included the fitting of the a Ruf front spolier and the painting and fitting of the Ruf A Post aerofoils. The paint was the original Satin Black, Dupont two pack - which was very expensive (about £300 quid, if I remember correctly). The guy who did it also then buffed the whole car using 3M hand glaze to make sure its was all shiny and matched. I must say he made a fanstatic job - he only does classic cars and really knows his stuff.
In regard to the insurance issue, mine was also an insurance job, however the difference between last year's quote and this year was £25
so you might want to consider this option.
