TG Supercar Challenge - Should have got a 911!

It's early, I've been at work 2 hours and the aircraft I'm supposed to be taking is STILL on a tech delay, so obviously I'm killing time on PH.....

Another great Top Gear last night - loved the £10,000 supercar challenge! But are those cars really that awful or do they just 'buy badly' to make good TV?

I know it doesn't fit the brief (mid-engined, Italian), but what sort of 911 would you get privately for £10,000 and how would it have got on in the various categories they 'tested'?

A quick search on Autotrader revealed several SCs in the bracket and, interestingly, a LHD 964 with 127,000 miles on it.......

A 911 in almost any shape would have trashed all three of the cars they chose.
You could find a 911 which is about to fail it's MOT on rust, and has engine oil leaks everywhere, but the technology involved would be so simple and robust and the electrics are on a different plane to that used by the three italians they bought that it would have been extremely unlikely to fail. The only concern may have been the fuel consumption, but i reckon an early 70's 2.2/2.4 would have managed 17mpg driven carefully.

I used to walk past a silver Merak on the way to the station.. Now realise why it was always parked in the same space..

All that item proved was that if you pay bottom-book price for a car, you get a ropey one. And if you then drive the nuts off it, it breaks...

TC did a "buy a Porsche for £1500" feature a while ago, very entertaining.
Interesting though that the Porsche's worth £1500 each were no worse than the Italian cars worth £10k !

exactly but one thing does puzzle me. Clarksons car had a bottom end failure big end, cracnk case etc etc.

wasnt his car the one that had a 10k engine re build.

According to the seller!!! Who also sold it as an 'S' model when it wasn't!

Fantastic comparison ; I remember them being tested the first time around in Car magazine !
Can`t help feeling a bit smug when my 924 Carrera starts every time and pulls like a train and does 30mpg! . I bet I could beat the Astra diesel too . Ha Ha
