replace caliper bolts with disk changes?
Discussion
Hi,
There was an article in PPost which mentioned the price of a pair of replacement disks AND caliper bolts - which makes me wonder do the bolts require changing each time disks are changed? The ppost article was for a GT3 - but can't imagine whic this particularly matters.
Could just be to keep parts & revenue flowing but I've never heard of this requirement before?
thanks,
AA

I would advise changing them, and make sure you replace them with the correct length. 72mm, 77mm or 82mm.
I have a 996 turbo and the offside front caliper had 72mm bolts but it should have had 77mm ones. They pulled out and the caliper fell off.
I have now replaced the calipers with GT3 6 pots and 82mm bolts and wonder how luck I was that the caliper fell off at 1mph - was doing 170mph 2 minutes earlier.

Well, the bolts are only about a quid each, so you might as well I suppose...
And the rest! More like £12+ each.
It is rumoured (can't quite get to the bottom of this) that the threads are coated with anti-oxidising stuff to stop bi-metallic corrosion between the steel bolt and the aluminium alloy hub.
Most people re-use them with a dab of loctite.

So that was the outcome of the calliper incident eh??? I have a set of 6 pots which I will be putting on when my current set-up expires. I have bought new bolts and will now be checking the lengths very carefully....
How much was the hub/calliper carrier repair scenario in the end???

The hub carrier was taken off the car (both sides) and redrilled and a steel thread inserted (This is apparently stronger than the original thread.
Tech 9 Motorsport carried out the conversion. They actually move the position of the calliper slightly so that the pressure on both the front and rear face of the disk is equal.
The total cost was over 3.5k but that did include braided hoses, castrol SRF and a full fast road geometry set up.
Oh.... and Porsche UK could not give a flying ....... about it. Even though the calliper which came off was replaced by Porsche centre Bournmouth in March 04 - Although the invoice does say that the bolts part numbers are correct!
Apparently the bolts could have been replaced with incorrect ones in the last 18 months!!! My car has FULL OPC service history and last had disks fitted by OPC Bournmouth.
...And they will not give a Goodwill gesture to any works carried out outside OPC even when you use Genuine parts.
Unfortunately for me, the three nearest OPC are Sheffield, Leeds or Newcastle and they are all JCT600......hence why I had it fixed elsewhere.

Well, they're about a quid for 944 caliper bolts
I just assumed they would be the same cost (ish) for all porkers... Though a fancy corrosion inhibiting coating on those bolts destined for newer cars would certaily add to the cost!
