Would be grateful for advice on the following:

My newly acquired 993 went to my local opc for a service/mot. I know, I know, don't send it to a opc etc, but too late now they've done it.

But anyway they have presented me with a list of other things they recomend, including:

2 resistors required - one for the stage 1 oil cooler? the other for the aircon? apparently the rear bumper needs to come off to get to both and they cost £150 each to replace? How important are these? What happens if you delay/don't replace them?

The only other big ticket item is the front wishbones could both do with being renewed followed by a 4 wheel realignment? Anyone know what this should cost? opc have quoted £500 for the wishbones and £200 for the alignment.

Then there is a list of other fairly minor stuff IMHO, all of which has big price tickets against it.

Anyway I'm happy to get all this done but would welcome advice on where to go. At the moment the closest indy I'm finding is autostrasse in Colchester but it's a bit of a hike.

Wish I'd bought a car from Henry instead!!!

Thanks

I assume that the bushes have gone in the wishbones. Well you don't have to buy new ones, you can replace the bushes if you want to.

here. www.design911.co.uk/index.htm?Region=UK
Just go to; Steering and suspension, and polly bushes.

Th resistors that you mention are common failures on 993s. They allow the aircon and oil cooler fans to operate at low speed. If they are not replaced you either get full speed or nothing. BTW it's the front bumper that needs to be removed. I had one of mine done before I collected my car, the resistor costs about £40 but I can't decipher the invoice fully to break out the associated labour.

I can't help with the wishbones either but I can tell you it's all "bread and butter" work for an independent. I'm sure someone will be along in a moment to give you more detail and hopefully recommend an independent to you.

You say its a newly acquired car. Did you buy the car from a dealer? Did you get it comprehensively checked before you bought it? If not, you will probably be paying for all this yourself.

The oil cooler and A/C resistors are probaly DIY jobs. Robin Sun's 993 page at
www.p-car.com is a pretty good resource. Good luck

I bought privately so all the costs are down to me.

Still I'm happy now it's been checked out and nothing major has shown up apart from these things. The opc charges aren't exactly scary, it's just that everybody on PH has advised me it would be foolish paying opc prices so if I can pay less and get a good (or better some seem t o be saying) elsewhere than I can spend the difference on xmas pressies for the kids.

And if its the front bumper that needs to come off, then I am worried about the opc. The guy said my back bumper stays could do with replacing and that they could do them while it was off to get at the resistors!!!!

I don't think too many OPC's have the expertise anymore to look after the air cooled 911s. Where are you based? I'm sure we could recommend a decent independent that will be much more beneficial for your car and your wallet.

I'm near Cambridge.

the opc already did a full service, which is when they listed these other recomendations. Actually its not a huge list, but I'd rather find a local Indy to do the work.

Also not sure why they want £150 each to fit for the resistors if they only cost £40 each.

Also not sure if £500 is reasonable for the wishbones. Or whether the wheel alignment is still £200 (which was the standalone quote)on top if you get the wishbones done. ie if they change the wishbones then would they have to realign the wheels as part of that job?

Someone local suggested a cambridge firm called Barr-tech, but they are not porsche specialists. Anyone had dealings with them.

I'm wondering about taking the car to JZ. It's a bit of a haul but I could probably get a train to London from there, so could tie the drop off/collection in with my commute to work.

Don't ask me why but I've just realised where Porsche are going with their model numbers, it's 999, the British emergency services. And of course the missing one is the millenium bug.

£500 is not reasonable for the wishbones. Mine were done in spring by JZ and iirc the cost was about £320

Thanks Mutt.

And do they align the wheels when they change the wishbones, or are the two jobs completely unconnected?

Anybody else know wat the charge should be for the resistors?

The previous owner of my car had the front wishbones done by Exeter OPC in March 2004 just before I bought it.

£161 per wishbone plus 20 squids worth of fittings plus £287 labour for work and wheel alignment. He therefore paid £629 for the job before Gordon Brown put his grubby mitt out. This doesn't help you much, other than indicating that the price you're quoting is not outlandish for an OPC.

My indy in France hits me about £150 for a good alignment job. Yes, the wheel alignment has to be done once the wishbones have been done. In any case, as you'll maybe find out, the tracking on a 993 is pretty sensitive and can need doing regularly to keep the car at its best.

When the wishbones next need doing I'll do it myself and replace the bushes, but I seem to recall reading that at garage labour rates it's dubious whether this reprsents a saving versus replacing the whole assembly.

No idea for the resistors, best of luck with your car.

If you're in Cambridge, its a no-brainer, get it down to Autostrasse.

The suspension geometry is critical on a 993 so worth spending money on but £500 does seem a lot for front wishbones.
