Hi all,

Having a top end rebuild done at the moment (3.2 carrera) and wondered if you guys had any suggestions on would be worth doing at the same time, if anything, such as mods, upgrading parts etc. Any ideas..........?
The engine at the moment is standard to the best of my knowledge except for a sports exhaust (cup pipe I think )
regards, Leigh.

Who is doing the rebiuld for you? I would imagine that getting the head ported and polished may be benefecial another thing to consider whilst the heads are off is getting them "decked" to increase the compression ratio.

But this is not something to rush into, you need to find someone who actualy knows what they are doing. I do here stories from other boards, were people have paid good money for engine tuning only to get no improvement or worse still a loss of performance!

Its probably worth contacting Ninem as they seem to be fairly knowledgeable when it comes to squeezing more grunt out of air cooled engines.

Been a bit quite actually to you question,
how are you getting on, have you commenced the project yet

You might try a question or two on Pelican

or failing that the Rennlist
Can be quite informative.

Thanks for your replies chaps.

Specialist Cars of Malton are doing the business and hopefully things will get started today. Whilst recent weather conditions haven't been great for a ride out in the old girl, having not driven it for over a week now is doing my head in ! Roll on summer, or even spring, or even just a day with no salt on the roads.........

Anyway, decked.....

as in getting the heads skimmed? What gains/improvement will this achieve?

I don't think I'm really after massive power gains as such but really anything that will benefit the the engine whilst it's in bits, out of the car etc that would be wise to do. If it's just a case of new hoses and oil pipes then I'll be happy with doing that but if stuff like porting and polishing and the like are worth doing then I will ask the question. Keep the suggestions/ideas coming as I appreciate them.

JWB - have you any suggestions/ideas, things that you would do apart from what we have already spoke about?

Merry all!

Leigh.

Seems like the season for 3.2 engine rebuilds huh...

Out of interest...did your mechanic/garage suggest that there was a possibility of the bottom end requiring treatment once the top end has all been sorted. I refer the honourable gentleman to my post here:

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?p=2&f=48&t=225028&h=0

You could opt for a more fruity exhaust system and possibly new airbox/filter whilst they are there?

Dom

Dom, I have been following your thread and that can't have been the best news you wanted to hear after having the top end just done! How is it progessing?
I did mention your case to my mechanic who said it was a rare case as they are generally a very strong bottom end and they haven't had such a case yet, d'oh! - maybe tempting fate there!

Regarding the exhaust, it was suggested a Stainless Steel Dansk system may release an additional 15 to 20 horses - any views on this system?

Leigh.
