Ok chaps, after your invaluable help I've just put a deposit on an 02 996tt in midnight blue, manual of course.
Thing is, the M5 (for sale on classifieds BTW) is going sensationally well with its new MAFs from a couple of weeks ago, today it was absolutely storming about (apart from when I was trying to get out of any 3rd gear salty/wet corners).
Well you can guess what I'm thinking can't you? Is this tt really going to be much quicker than the M5? Obviously it seemed fast enough on the test drive but I wasn't used to it and didn't really get much of a feel for the speed -- other than that the throttle wasn't as responsive as the mighty V8's, because of the wait for the turbos to start their work. But it soon spooled up and took off.
Anyone else gone from E39M5 to 996tt care to give me some cause for excitement leading up to the early new year pickup?

I went from a E39 M5 to a 996 targa then to a 996tt then to a 996tt
My M5 was a pile of poo as it broke down a lot. It was fast in a straight line and ok on the bends but its a heavy car, doesnt take to direction changes as well as the 911 and in the bends would not get a look in on the 996tt. The M5 brakes were ok for a bit but nothing on the Porkers stoppers. The 996tt so much better, much more fun and more WoW looking.
I get excited EVERY time I look at the 996tt and every time I drive it its an event and fun. The M5 was just nice (apart from when it was broke) and the tv and other elec toys fun but not really what makes a car a long term prospect for me. It didnt hold my interest long.
You will love the 996tt.
One word of caution, the 996tt is a 'super car' it is fantastic, its amazing, its one of the best cars ever made, but dont get swept away with taking more and more liberties with it. It cant defy the laws of physics no mater how much praise and 5 star rating it gets in write ups and by drivers. - I got swept along one day and hence now on my 2nd 996tt - the first one being written off within 2 mth of ownership.
Im loving the car even more now, with a much healthier respect for the laws of physics.

As mustard mentioned I run both cars and they make a great pair.
The M5 is a quick car and with the sport button ON the change in throttle respeonse makes it feel even quicker. As mentioned though, it is a heavy car and it feels it through the corners, I've also managed to over heat my front brakes once or twice.
What you are paying the extra money for is another step foward in oooopmh and braking performance combined with far better cornering abilities due to stiffer suspension and what feels like a lot less weight even though it may only be 15 % lighter.
I don't think you'll regret the move one bit. Let us know how you get on and welcome to the forum.
There is a lot of modifying potential with the turbo, but I'd concentrate on getting to know the car first. The one thing I would implore you to do is fit an alloy gear shift linkeage as the original plastic porsche part has a reputation for falling off. I can think of at least half a dozen regular PH posters and VMAXers that have experienced this problem, leaving them stranded by the side of the road. Oh, to really know what this car is about you need to go touring in Europe and belt it up and down some quiet derestricted autobahns and mountain passes (Did someone say minihoon!!!!!! where we'll be visiting Ruf and hopefully the Porsche factory and museum)

I don't think I'd call the M5 a pile of poo. It's a tough act to follow, hiding the weight well enough and stonking midrange. Not to mention silent 150mph cruising and sumptuous comfort.
It's been in the shop a few times though under warranty for sensors but now seems to have settled down quite well, better than it's ever been somehow.
Really appreciate the words of warning, they sound pretty much perfectly aimed for me and I'll take them on board.
How did you wreck the car BTW?

Im sure the M5 generally are not a pile a poo - my M5 was becasue it kept braking down and falling apart on me

was that the ill-fated over taking just before a bend incident.....glad you got yourself another one
(although had finished the overtake safely)

A minihoon sounds fun. Would you let a Cayman owner join in? I'm well trained in beer buying etc
didnt fill in a claims form. All done on the phone.
Had a quick chat to the police on the phone the next day, they were happy.
Just told insurance and the police them I had crashed, no other car involved. Car recovered and inspected and a cheque for my purchase price in my hands about 5 weeks later. Well done Norwich Union Direct.

will certainly keep an eye on that one. The wife is very happy to lounge around in the spa facilities and takes photos of scenery etc so whole deal looks first class. Plus it'll be a great way to meet some other PHers and get to know the car better You never know, but the boys at Ruf may even have some upgrades for the Cayman by then , now where did I put the credit card Regards

The crashed one was black. my new one is midnight blue.
It did smart a bit!. cuts and later discovered pulled muscles in the lower back, which neccesated a chropracter in the end.
I would not want to hit any harder as my lower back would have been damaged. If I had hit side on I dont think I would have survived. The fire crew were surprised I got out without major injuries. It was about 40mph on impact
It was actually 2 trees, Tree 1 -The splintered one - the other part is the almost 45 degree trunk in the pic and the 2nd tree is the one nearest to the front left wheel which also was cracked but not splintered.
And i did get billed by the council for removing bits of trees from the road. Lucky no tree preservation orders were in force.
