Porsche plots future plans

Cayman RS among the flood of new models

Porsche Cayman RS by 2008?
Porsche Cayman RS by 2008?
Porsche's share price and profits are down, following the money it spent buying 20 per cent of VW, and the cash it's pouring into developing its upcoming GT, the Panamera. In spite of that, Stuttgart is preparing a raft of new models to keep us entertained -- and sales up.

According to Autocar, which spoke recently with Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking, the 911 Turbo Cabriolet has been spotted on test in South Africa, while the 911 Turbo Targa and 911 GT3 are well-advanced in their development. There are even rumours of the much-mooted entry-level Cayman -- not that much of a surprise, given that Porsche launched the S variant first.

Further out could be a stripped-out Cayman RS for 2008 to fill in the gap as sales of the by-then established 997 and Boxster start to slow.

There are even hints that the company would like to revisit the Mercedes 500E and Audi RS2 projects, which saw Porsche building high-performance variants of those companies' vehicles. And given that Porsche now owns a chunk of VW, it's a distinct possibility. Fancy a Porsche-tweaked Golf R32?

Oh yes, and the Cayenne is being updated to make it look just a little bit less ugly.

No.

But considering how Porsche now owns a stake in VW, does this open up Lamborghini, Bugatti and all that as well?

Would the entry level Cayman be called a Lesbayan ?

Nothing against the car, think it`s lovely. Just still struggling to come to terms with the name.

A Cayron? A Veyman? A Dooronron?

Don't think there's too much scope for tweakage of the Veyron really, though it'd be fun if someone who could afford the bills tried!

I testdrove the Cayman S yesterday, I think it is a very accomplished car, not 911 quick, but handles good. BUT after driving it and getting back in to my Elise, i had the same thought... why not make a version with less wheight, less dashboard (sat-nav...who needs it?), more noise (engine sounds great... i want to hear more!)... a Club-sport or RS or whatever it will be called. But hey, it's Porsche, it'll probably lose 20 lb...

Well that's pretty easy-they just need to turn on the lights in the cave that Cayenne designer dreams up that rubbish so he can see what the hell he's doing!

Do you think they going to stop with the crappy names or will we really end with a Cockster or maybe a Cucumber S(alad)to go with that Cayenne pepper sir?

Porsche updated Veyron? Nah, too ridiculous. How about an RS Cayenne? Everyone knows a stripped-out truck with track aspirations would sell like the bollox! (Actually, it might appeal to Muhommed Al-Schumacher, Saudi Arabia's alledged sand dune legend)

I dunno. Like the idea of a Cayman RS, but it would tread on the toes of the Carrerra S on price terms.

I would be surprised if this is not on the cards. The AG already announced that since the current car is the S, history shows that there is always something before or after the S in the Porsche world.

Ordered one
1 march delivery great car.
But originally wanted the DSG box that Porsche were working on way back when I put a letter of intent in.

Yes the car will handle more power but what Porsche won’t
And with a stake in VW they might get the DSG box to work?

Have already got a letter of intent in just in case

They Cayman will have a following somewhat like the 911's following, and they will require further modification.. and won't hesitate to go aftermarket for it. Porsche doesn't necessarily need to produce an RS unless they really want to
