Advice/Tips On Buying A Used Boxster

Hi

I’ve read a lot of the older threads on the board, a wealth of knowledge – been very informative. Have been a reader round these parts for a while now and looking to purchase a Boxster soon, although not in a massive rush.

I’m looking at spending somewhere up to about £18/19k, maybe a little less if I can get away with it!!! I’m hoping to find a 3.2 with 25k or under on it (the age isn’t an issue, the mileage & history is what I’m after), although I might settle on a 2.7.
I know there are a few about but I’m prepared to have to wait for the right car as obviously these ones don’t come up too often with such low mileage. (so probably looking at a 2000ish car).

From the old threads I’ve read I’ve decided it’s wise to get the car I choose checked out by an official Porsche dealer for about £150-200 by the looks of some of the older threads.

I’ll be looking to do an upgrade on the lights and that should be about it.

Other than Leather there isn’t a great deal else I’m certain that I want/need. Anyone got any advice on what extras I should be looking at trying to get? Are there any extras that I should consider a real must or really worthwhile looking out for?

Any other advice/help would be much appreciated on what to look out for when buying etc?

You'll be lucky to get a 3.2 with low mileage for that money.

I'd recommend a Porsche specialist instead of an OPC for an inspection, they are more used to dealing with problems on older cars and know what to look for.

Use an OPC if you want to extend or retain the Porsche warranty.

Am I correct in assuming that you only get a 2yr warranty with a new boxster? …..so warranty could only be extended on a say a 4yr old car if it had been extended by the previous owner (i.e. it was still under an extended warranty).

Anyone taken out an aftermarket warranty from elsewhere…….I’ve seen on other forums people who have taken these out for around £700ish I think; might be interested in that if it’s worthwhile?

OPC Warranty is £750 - and comes with European Roadside Assistance. I have renewed it twice since the two year warranty ran out on mine - which I bought new. Peace of mind. But expensive.

Nice to know, though, that if the engine lunches itself one day they'll fit a new one F.O.C.

You can have the warranty put on your car at any time as long as it's less than 10 years old. If the existing warranty has lapsed, the OPC will to a check for around £200 and then issue the warranty for an extra £750 if all is ok.

That doesn't sound like a bad move.

How good is the warranty cover though....obviously wear & tear isn't included are they generaly willing to do stuff under the extended one or are they looking to get out of paying for it on account of wear & tear?

The Porsche warranty is very good. I still have it on my 993tt at more than 8 years old!

Having looked round a bit more these last few days I’m starting to think I might be better looking at a 2.5 or a 2.7 (probably the 2.7) as I’ll get something with less mileage on her and a bit newer too.

One further bit of advice….is it best to go for a manual box or a tiptronic? Usually go for manual but quite fancy a tip; although perhaps there might be a bit more to go wrong on one of these?

Just out of interest; at what point did Porsche make the changes to update the Boxster…main ones appear to be the lights and round the boot area from when I saw two side by side at JCT?

boxster facelift on 2003 52 reg. 2.7 up 8 bhp to 228, 157mph, 6.4secs to 62, torque unchanged @ 192 lb ft. Best cosmetic change is the glass rear screen from plastic, therefore improving visability. Front and rear bumbers are also new, body coloured air intakes @ the front.
