Porsche 993 prices vs 996
Discussion
I really fancy a 993. Unfortunatly the prices seem to be really high when compared to 996's. I realise they were in comparison somewhat limited run, but they seem to be holding really high. The turbo prices are virtually on a level playing field. The c2 botttom spec cars are 24k with similar miles to some 996's you see. There is only 1 or £2k in it.
I guess my question is, why are 993's LHD 8k less than similar spec RHD's. And are the price's of 993's actually going to hold in the next year. It seems to me all the models are finally comming down (boxsters, 968's, 996's, 964's) but these pesky 993's arent. I think that 12 months from now the price will drop to 15k. which is a lot of car for your money. i think at the moment perhaps they are overvalued quite heavily.
What do you think? Crazy talk, or some sense in what i say

Had a quick search around the forum (after posting... oops!) and it seems there is plenty of discussion on the merits of a 993 vs a 996, but little on the continued situation of prices.
Personally I am a 993 boy, father has had both, and i love the 993. I just fear a 993dotcom bubble burst... They really do seem unnasturally high. And whilst as porsche enthusiasts on here, we can say the 993 is good so... In reality porsche enthusiasts are a very small proportion of the people who will buy the UK stock of 993's and cheap 996's. Will those people keep the prices up...

You've answered your own question. There is continued demand for the 993 and limited supply. Probably the opposite to 996's as anyone who wants one can simply walk to there nearest tesco and pick one up.
I doubt you'll ever see a £15K 993.
Some cars are worth more than the sum of there parts, why else would a 993gt2 or 993rs be worth more than the cars they are based upon yet come with less?

Don't expect 993 prices to drop in a hurry - the build quality compared to 996's makes a big difference, along with the cult status the air cooled stuff has (it does feel more special than the newer stuff) and the fact that Porsche made an awful lot of 996's.
Suspect a year from now the bottom end of the 996 market will be below the top end of the 964 market. 993's won't be moving up or down in a hurry.

Good isn't it? Won't be long until we can buy disposable 996s to runaround in, for when we don't want to get our 993s dirty.
Joking aside, have you ruled out a LHD 993? Many think they're better the way Porsche intended them. Very suprised you've found an £8k difference, are you comparing like with like? Personally, I would rate the better ex-Germany cars, with known provenance and documented history, above typical UK cars. The fact the market doesn't value them as highly makes them more of a bargain to me. Buy on condition, as they say, not which side the wheel's on...

I've been looking at 993 prices very closely over the past 12 months or so, and 993 prices are starting to fall. 12 months ago, a good 993 was costing 33K + at specialist dealers. They have now fallen to sub £30Ks, with private sellers at a similar price. Poorer 993 (needing new clutches, high milers which need some TLC) are around the £24K mark. This has had an effect on 964 prices, which have dropped by around £1-2K in the last 12 months.
The S cars still are commanding somewhere between £2-8K over and above the standard 993. Some S cars are unrealistically high, but the dealers who are selling them are cash rich, and don't need to shift them in a hurry. Hence, some bugger will be prepared to pay for them at some point. There's the odd one here and there which seem to go against the grain. Whoever is going to buy a 993 at £37K is going to lose his shirt in depreciation.
The 996s are falling to a level, which unfortunately, is going to put them in the grasp of people who are not going to be able to afford to run them properly. You need to budget £1-2K for them per year. The chap who could just about afford a high miler M3 is now looking at 996s. I think you're going to see a number of pricing divisions in the 996. The first will be newer ones with full OPC histories, the second older 996s with a mix of OPC/Specialists, and the rest with 98-01 cars with a mixture of history. I would want to buy the third category privately to understand the type of person who has owned the car.
Finally, I struggle to see 996s falling below 964s. 964s should be at abount 18K max for a top example. 996s with new a new clutch, RMS etc is not going to be sub 18K. I reckon the best examples would be a 99-01 with a new engine fitted by Porsche - there seem to be a few about.

you will find a two tier market with the 993 s will happen much like it has on 3.2 carreras...the very best cars will fetch very high prices, car with high mileage, less than perfect spec etc will be hard to shift...........I think high miler painted up 993 s will settle around the 18-19K mark this year.

Yes, a 2-tier market will always develop as the cars get older, leading people to conclude (possibly incorrectly) that values are falling. They may be - for the ones that are getting scruffier and piling on the miles. But the demand seems to be there for both good and bad - hence many 993s being genuinely worth more than 996s. I suspect 993s will never fall out of favour - the scruffy ones will eventually be good candidates for restoration.
Clearly the prices are getting silly now. I just saw a '97 993 being offered at close to £30.000 with 97.000 miles!!!!!!. That is very close to a good early pre facelift 996 with about a third of the mileage. Now I know that the 993 is getting rarer but there seems to be a lot of them comming out right now as 993 owners probably give the 996 a miss and go for a new 997 - but seriously the 993 is a great car but its driving position is flawed and it just feels old fashioned compared to a 1999-2000 vintage 996. This is all my opinion obviously but 4-5 year old 996s seem to be good value for money.

What you ask for and what you get a two entirely different things.
A late 993 with 100k should be around £23/22k (dependent on spec, history and condition)

Yeah, but i want to know what POORCARDEALER thinks... i have heard from you and sleep envy
"well, they were good in their time but people want a more modern car mate. There ain't much demand for these old birds anymore, so :breathinginthrutightlips: I could go as high as 15 grand - and I wouldn't be making anything on that meself. You're a nice genuine chap so I don't mind doin you a favour mate"
....but surely all car dealers aren't the same, are they?
