Jump Start Issue - 996/986

Hi all,

Battery appears to be dying. All electrics working (including the alarm!)...not enough juice to turn over.

Tried to jump start but no go. TECHY QUESTION - Will a dead or dying cell prevent a jump start being effective? Should I worry that it is something more serious?

Not Porsche specific advice but having been a MG Rover salesman I have jumped a fair few cars over the years

Try giving it a while longer with the leads connected before you turn it over (a few minutes), then before you do make sure the immobiliser hasn't rearmed as this is fairly common.

Hope this helps and it isn't stuff you already know, if you do then my apologies.

Not getting a good connection will cause it too. If it turns over exactly the same with the leads connected then you didn't get them on quite right

I would say no, a dodgy battery should not stop the car from being jump started. The only effect I'd expect would be on the ability of the battery to then be charged and then start the car again under its own power.

Silly question - you sure that the jump leads are decent ones capable of the job, as I've had problems using crap ones in the past? Connect up the positive terminals of the two batteries, then connect the negative terminal of the donor battery to a chunk of metal on the engine rather than the negative post of the sick battery. Hopefully the engine will then turn over OK.

Cheers all. Didn't leave it that long connected. Figure the battery was going for a while now and I had left it standing for over 2 weeks. I have ordered a new bosch silver which I will fit this week. If that does not work then off to the OPC with it.

In my experience of jumpstarting my (now former) 996tt - it takes a real kick to start them.

Cheapo jump leads will not do it and I couldn't start the tt from a Merc 4x4 so it wasn't a wimpy source - leads just weren't thick enough.

The RAC man ended up doing it with his turbo nutter battery pack and confirmed as much - get some proper quality very thick leads and a hefty source.

In the end I bought an RAC branded charger/starter box myself from Argos which did the job on future occasions - it happened often.
